SUPPORT OUR WORK FOR £20 FOR A YEAR
Dear Friends,
In the short time we have been in existence we have exposed the wrongdoings and failings of several high profile politicians. These have included:
-
Gordon Brown's favourite think-tank The Smith Institute and its breach of the charity laws covering party political activity. Following the Charity Commission investigation initiated by the Sunlight COPs, Paul Myners and Wilf Stevenson resigned from the board of trustees and the organisation was put on review by the Charity Commission.
-
Complaint to the Parliamentary Commissioner about Caroline Spelman's expenses. Caroline Spelman was ordered to pay back money claimed for her nanny by the parliamentary authorities
.
-
Investigations into Peter Hain's funding for his leadership election campaign contributed to him resigning from the cabinet.
-
A Sunlight complaint to the Association of Professional Political Consultants about Peter Hain's lobbyist/campaign manager resulted eventually in him being expelled of the political lobbyist's self-regulatory organisation.
-
Sunlight put in the first complaint to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner regarding Jacqui Smith's second home allowances and battled with the Commissioner to force an ongoing investigation.
-
We have made a wide ranging preliminary submission to the Committee on Standards in Public Life regarding MPs expenses which will contribute to shaping the regulatory regime which governs MPs in the future and we are monitoring and lobbying on this issue.
-
We have just initiated an investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner into Shahid Malik's suspicious rent arrangements for his office and his constituency home.
-
We reported Jim Devine MP to the Metropolitan Police for fraud.
-
We have reported the Liberal Democrat CEO Lord Rennard to the House of Lords authorities after he claimed for a "holiday home" just two miles from Westminster.
Our campaign attracts a lot of national and local press interest and have a dedicated media operation to promote our work. We have have been successful across the full spectrum of the British media. Our work has been picked up by SkyNews, the BBC, as well as international news wires. All our staff are media trained and act in a professional and balanced manner. A recent example is our our complaint regarding Shahid Malik which scored hundreds of national media hits between the 11th and 16th June 2009. (Media hits listed
here.)
In addition to this we have many ongoing investigations and are making sure that MPs caught up in the expenses scandal don't escape proper scrutiny through safety in numbers.
However, running the Sunlight Centre requires support from like minded members of the public. Unlike the government we won't be wasting what we have, and every penny you can give will go to furthering our goal - an open and transparent Westminster. To support our campaign costs £20. Being a supporter gives you the opportunity to be part of our campaign to expose the failings in the British political system. You will also benefit from access to our unique non-partisan social network which has a forum, blog, discussions and the ability to meet like minded politicos. As well as this you will receive regular updates from the team and be doing your part in shining a light in the dark corridors of power, which for too long have gone unchecked.
*In the interests of openness and transparency all donations will be publicly declared.
Thank you for your support.
