Volunteer Opportunities 2009-2010

Committees:

Assemblies

This committee reviews assembly proposals and selects the best ones for our schools.  Parent assemblies are also part of the work of this committee.  The Assemblies committee is chaired by Kristen Rinehart at TES and Jill Reiter at OTS.

Hospitality

Do you like to bake?  Would you like to organize other people who are willing to do so?  This committee provides food and drinks at a few events throughout the year (snacks at Monster Mash, finger food for special meetings, etc.), and also coordinates the back-to-school breakfast for the teachers. The Hospitality committee is chaired by Terri Maddaloni.

Voter Registration

Passage of the school budget is very important, and every vote counts.  This committee works to make sure that all parents in our schools are registered to vote, provides information about absentee ballots, and information about the school budget.  The Voter Registration committee is chaired by Susan Brower.

Welcoming

This committee is responsible for welcoming new families to OTS and TES.  We have an overall coordinator as well one assistant for each grade level.  The role of grade-level representative is to make contact with the new family and offer any kind of help or support they may need.  The Welcoming committee is chaired by Patsy DelGrande.

Fundraisers:

Sally Foster (Fall)

This is one of the main fundraisers that provide the money to sponsor all of the PTA events and programs.  This committee organizes the distribution of fundraising materials and ensures that the orders are tallied and fulfilled.  It also arranges for the sorting and distribution of orders in early November – we especially need volunteers to help with this part.  The Sally Foster fundraiser is coordinated by Claudia Gilbert.

Original Art Works  (Spring)

This committee organizes the program that transforms your children’s artwork from a simple drawing into a pillowcase, notepaper, t-shirt, garden flag, etc.  We need volunteers to organize the distribution of the flyers to parents, work with the art teachers to have the children create their art, and distribute the final products to parents.  The Original Art Works fundraiser is coordinated by Patty Mauriello.

Spirit Wear

This committee designs, sells and distributes Tewksbury-wear to the general school community.  Sales are held twice a year – in the fall and in the spring. The Spirit Wear fundraiser is led by Lisa Nowell.

Box Tops

This committee coordinates the General Mills “Box Tops for Education” program.  Parents collect the box tops and the school can redeem them for cash.  Kids and classrooms are recognized for their efforts periodically during the year.  Duties include promotion of the program to parents as well as the collection and submission of the box tops to General Mills.  The Box Tops fundraising program is coordinated by Dawn Towle.

Special Events and Services to the Community:

Monster Mash 

The Monster Mash is a fun way for our students to celebrate Halloween together. The students come in costume and we provide plenty of goodies, Halloween decorations, and a DJ to work the crowd.  Monster Mash fun also includes games, crafts, contests, and a costume parade.  We need people to help with the planning, decorating, coordinating the food donations, and supervising the crafts and activities. The Monster Mash is chaired this year by Lisa Edmund.

Holiday Shop – coordinators needed

This committee plans and runs the Holiday Shop at TES in early December.  The Holiday Shop is a chance for the children of TES to purchase their own holiday gifts for family and friends.  They love the independence and learn a little about math in the process.  We would also like to have a Holiday Shop at OTS for the 5^th & 6^th graders – just in need of some volunteers!

Teacher Appreciation Week

Tewksbury’s Teacher Appreciation Week is held during National Teacher Appreciation Week, the first week of May.  Volunteers are needed to assist the coordinators with the luncheon, special events during the week, purchase flowers or other gifts for the teachers, and organize tributes from the students.  Teacher Appreciation is led by Beth Urbanski at TES and we are currently in need of coordinators for Teacher Appreciation at OTS.

School Supply Kits

This committee works with the teachers to develop a list of school supplies needed for the start of school.  It also chooses a company to provide the supplies.  The committee is responsible for sending home flyers in May or June to inform parents of the program, coordinating the orders, and distributing the kits in September.  The School Supply Kits program is coordinated by Debbie Atulomah.

In addition to all of the above, there are many other ways in which our PTA works behind the scenes to make things happen.  We would love to have you join us in our work to support the students and teachers of Tewksbury.  If you are interested in helping with any of the above, or have ideas on other ways to get involved, please let us know.  We look forward to working with you!
