AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY THEATER OPENS 2009-10 SEASON

WITH TONY AWARD-WINNING EVITA

Azusa, CA  Azusa Pacific University Theater opens its 2009-10 season with the musical Evita,  opening October 1, 2009. This is a powerful production that has a whole new meaning in our current cultural and political climate, and a show not to be missed.

Evita is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award winning musical, famous for songs such as the classic, “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina.” It investigates Eva Paron’s rise from poverty to becoming the voice of a nation as the wife of President Juan Peron. As a supporter of a corrupt government while being named spiritual leader of the nation, her controversial and unmatched place in history as a woman, politician, celebrity, and spiritual leader is still debated today, and her adversary, Che Guevera, has become a symbol of counterculture.

Evita is truly powerful and I'm impressed with this production. I would encourage both loyal fans and those new to musical theater to start with this show. It is especially poignant for the times we live in,” says Bart McHenry, Chair of the Theater, Film and Television Department at Azusa Pacific University.

The whole community is invited to spend an evening at the theater for this production, rated T for Teen (recommended for teenagers and adults.) Shows run October 1–3, 8–10, 15-17 at 7:30 p.m. and
October 3, 10, and 17 at 2 p.m.. at the Azusa Pacific University Mary Hill Theater on the West Campus of Azusa Pacific University.
