Q: Much like the trend from VHS to DVD, is there going to be a technology that trumps the greatness of Blu-ray?

A: All technology evolves. Undoubtedly, there will eventually be a better video format than Blu-ray. I believe Samsung demoed a prototype "Ultra High Definition" TV capable of displaying 4k resolution at CES this year. However, there is no great pressure in the industry to move beyond 1080p source material in the immediate future. I'd expect the next jump to be several years out, at least. And it probably won't be a physical disc. In fact, Blu-ray may well be the last hurrah for movies on a packaged medium. If some of our bandwidth and infrastructure issues ever get sorted out, the next evolution will come in the form of video downloads.

Of course, I'm just speculating here. No one can say for certain what the future will bring. Except Bill Gates. That guy knows everything.

HD Video where do we go from here? 4K - Refers to approximately 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution used in several digital formats for shooting the highest-quality video or scanning 35mm frames. 4K movies can be used intact for digital cinema theater projection or downsized to HD and other formats. With the huge number of pixels captured in 4K resolution, scaled down images also retain more detail. Following are the 4K (and 2K) digital resolutions for common cinema formats. See aspect ratio and digital cinema.

4K
Horizontal Aspect Megapixels
Cinema Formats Resolution Ratio Per Frame
Academy Standard 3626x2664 1.37:1 9.7 MP
Academy Flat 3996x2160 1.85:1 8.6 MP
Anamorphic Scope 4096X1714 2.39:1 7.0 MP
2K
Academy Standard 1828x1332 1.37:1 2.4 MP
Academy Flat 1998x1080 1.85:1 2.2 MP
Anamorphic Scope 2048x858 2.39:1 1.8 MP

AreaGuides Network - forward looking, where is your company headed? Moore's Law - Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware. Since the invention of the integrated circuit in 1958, the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit has increased exponentially, doubling approximately every two years. Almost every measure of the capabilities of digital electronic devices is strongly linked to Moore's law: processing speed, memory capacity, even the number and size of pixels in digital cameras.[6] All of these are improving at (roughly) exponential rates as well.[7] This has dramatically increased the usefulness of digital electronics in nearly every segment of the world economy.[8] Moore's law describes this driving force of technological and social change in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.; Flying cars? Living Forever??
