- Marrion sent African American Studies department email. They are going to discuss Ms. Cooke and racial profiling. They will support us.
- NUBAA will also support us
- Want university and Kellogg to issue apology to Josh personally
- University stance on racial profiling? There needs to be.
- Rally next Tuesday or Wednesday
- (Beth) Task force idea – emailed people about it
- Lots of ideas need to be narrowed down
- Ideas?
- (Tyris) Forum with officers on campus
- (Kellyn) Compile list of complaints
- (Camille) I wasn’t aware of this before. People are probably looking for FMO to take the lead on this
- (Nissi) Felt frustration and anger. It’s a lot more serious than black students on this campus have been taking it Officers say these complaints have not been filed. Hand out material at the beginning of the year so that officers are completely aware of what racial profiling is and how to avoid it.
- (Marrion) FMO should focus on this, possibly our focus for the year
- (Nissi) Mention students knowing their rights
- (Marrion) Add to handbook or website. Go through students’ rights at Black Student Experience
- (Tyris) Upset a comments about situation on NBN. Rally should not be passive.
- (Nissi) Tone of rally should be as purposeful and crafted as possible
- (Camille) If we co-sponsor, it is imperative FMO has the last word. Josh made his plea, and it unnerved people. Then, the white guy diluted the situation. It’s okay for people to go home upset. If FMO is on the forefront, we need to have the last say because the other minority groups don’t completely understand our struggle.
- (Beth) We can focus the firesides around this issue. We can possibly talk to fraternities as well.
- (Marrion) This should continue to resurface next year. When this happens, we’re surprised because we don’t know it happens often. This could be a them throughout the year. State of the Black Union could be focused on this. Publicity on campus and off campus.
- Unity Fashion Show Mishap
- Last year, Zach signed us on as a co-sponsor and we were called in for reprimand. The groups that took power didn’t know about how contracts work. They got Mr. Chi City. They got a verbal agreement and started to publicize, but he said he was not coming. We got group misconduct from SAFC. They gave us a timeline about how to do this process.
- Meeting with VP Banis on Tuesday and Cooke on Wednesday
- Banis just wanted to know if everyone was on board with this.
- Marrion stressed that we were upset with Ms. Cooke because she doesn’t communicate with us. Leaders of groups like ASA know who she is but she doesn’t know who they are. We need to make this as unpersonal as possible
- Ms. Cooke seemed like she wanted to jump on board about racial profiling
