Economics Student Organization

Meeting Minutes – 07.29.09

I. Madhu recently met with Professors Bajari and Sahi regarding departmental              changes. Also addressed the possibility of Professors teaching more              classes.

II. The Brochure

Content was reevaluated and edited. Suggestions were made regarding various font sizes and placement of categories. Format looks good but layout is being addressed with respect to marketing appeal and aesthetics.

III. Paper Competition

Madhu suggested ESO draft a proposal for the Department of Economics regarding our paper competition. Chris noted that Department endorsement increases the size of grants.

The structure needs to be refined. We need prerequisites for applicants, grading contingencies for various volumes of submission, and how we can incorporate the marketing of Conferences and Undergraduate Journal Publications.

IV. Fall Kick-Off

Tony talked to Jenna about funding for 2010 year, since proposals for grants are usually submitted the previous May.

It is quite possible to have Target return for future events. It was mentioned that Target has the potential to bring food or cater events, which would be important if funding were ever an issue.

Chris reasserted his fondness for Colleen. We need a date for the FALL Alumni event.

V. Miscellaneous

The Alumni Event in the fall could be slated for early October to mid-November. It is important to identify a focus when selecting panelists. Should the panelists be able to describe how Economics was an asset in getting their first job/promotion?

Professor Chris Phelan is the new Director of Graduate Studies.

Other potential events to add to October’s calendar:

  1. Kaplan event.
  2. Graduate School information/discussions/etc
  3. Study Abroad Panel is a terrible idea

For the spring 2010 semester, Beth Laurie (sp?) is an excellent resource to identify companies who have been helpful and cooperative with the University in the past. For next week, Need to address survey content for ESO member application.
