This hearing will bring to light mental health issues that are most salient for the Asian
American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Community. Contrary to
the model minority myth, AANHPIs have serious needs for mental
health care that have been inadequately addressed.
The hearing will involve testimony from mental health care experts, primary care service providers, patients, researchers, advocates, and community based organizations.

Graduate and Professional Students Appreciation Week : (GPSAW - 2009)

Join this national celebration of highlighting the achievements of graduate students and their impact on the intellectual, social and all-encompassing development of the society. We recognize that after four long years of undergrad education, when a person picks up his or her books again to pursue the timeless tradition of Einstein, Nobel and Chomsky, it is not an easy path he or she chooses. We plan to highlight the achievements our graduate and professional students community, and send out a big “shout out” to them.

Do you know how many minutes do you think a physician spends with their patient? Did you know that your communication skills can prevent malpractice? Did you know that you can improve compliance by being a better communicator? Come learn more about the issues surrounding communication in all health professions. This will be an open discussion amongst all graduate students and Professors Evans and Clarke. Professors Evans, Professor of Communication, and Professor Clarke, Professor of Preventive Medicine and of Communication, have published "Surviving Modern Medicine" - a book based on more than 500 studies in the medical and behavioral literature. There will be a small lunch and drinks available for those who RSVP by Friday, November 6.

>> Take a Hike : See LA from atop Griffith Park
Thursday (11.12.09): 6PM to 8PM (Griffith park)
Students will be able to disconnect from the concrete jungle of Los Angeles and view its breath taking beauty from the heights of the Griffith Park. Every Tuesday and Thursday, a group of avid outdoors people get together at Griffith Park close to sundown. They are the Los Angeles Sierra Club members. For each of these evening hikes, difficulty levels are assigned and visitors can choose their level of difficulty based on their aerobic state. There are difficult to very easy hikes on each of these days. The hikes are lead by Sierra Club volunteers who know the trails well. The overall hikes are about 2 hours of light workout. Towards the end of the hike, you can see the entire LA basin in true glory of night lights. this is a great opportunity for students to socialize with like minded people while giving them a touch of how staying healthy can be so much fun. Friends and Neighbors Service Day!

USC Volunteer Center hosts these one day service events that take place on Saturdays throughout the school year and provide a great opportunity to meet fellow students as well as get involved in the surrounding community. Some of the past projects included beautification, community gardening, friendly visiting, hunger and homelessness, and painting projects, etc.

3rd Annual Gender Justice Month

All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the Third Annual Gender Justice Month. This year’s theme is gender issues in the Pacific Islands. Events will include the film premiere of “Trans/Formed” on Tuesday, November 10th and the month’s signature panel discussion on Thursday, November 19th. The panel will feature fa’afafine identified individuals from American Samoa as well as transgendered people from the Los Angeles area. Sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Assembly (GLBTA), the month’s events promote issues of gender identity and expression and help develop a network of transgender allies.
