Grading
- Your semester grade will be based on the following:
- Homework: 35%
- Essays: 55%
- Class Presence: 10%
Assignments
- All work must be handed in or presented at the start of class, and it must be handed in or presented in person. Anything after that time will be considered late and down graded one grade per day. Please realize that a little bit of notice goes a long way. If you, for some extreme reason, cannot complete your homework, please contact me ASAP so as to avoid that horrible in-class embarrassment of “What do you mean you didn’t do your homework?”
- You must save all of your assignments.
- All assignments must be typed.
- Essay length – 3 pages or less.
Blog requirements
- Once a week you are required to post a comment on the class blog. Weeks are counted as Monday-Sunday, so anywhere in there is open for posting.
- The content of your posts will be related to your selected writer. You will be following one writer for the entire semester. As you read you will notice patterns, changes, a clear voice from this writer. At times, I hope, you will be wowed with a line, a literary device, a moment within the work that dazzles you or befuddles you; that's what I would like you to share on the blog. Of course, tell us why this tidbit struck you and why you decided to share.
Attendance
- You are expected to come to class on time.
- If you are late, please have a note from a teacher/administrator explaining your tardiness. If that is not possible, please come with a tardy slip from Lindsay Neville.
In Class Behavior
- You are expected to participate in class on a regular basis.
- No talking while others are talking.
- Always come to class with a pen/pencil, notebook, your book(s), syllabus, and planner.
- No derogatory comments towards others in the classroom.
- No profanity.
- Cell phones are NOT allowed in class in the ON position. At no time should your phone ring, vibrate, or make itself known to anyone. If this should happen, I will confiscate your phone for 24 hours.
Academic Honesty (see p. 19-20 of the handbook)
- Let no one copy your homework; do not collaborate on assignments unless you have been told in writing that the assignment is a group assignment.
- Do not plagiarize.
- Do not cheat.
- Do not lie or engage in any dishonest behavior.
Supplies
- You need to have a folder or three ring binder to keep all of your homework assignments, drafts, and final essays. You will use this collection of work to write your self-evaluation at the end of the semester, so please keep this neat and organized.
Golden Rules
- Honesty will always be rewarded.
- I’m not here to judge and punish you. I’m here to help you think and learn.
- “A successful student is one whose primary goal is to expand their knowledge and their ways of thinking and investigating the world. They do not see grades as an end in themselves but as a means to continue to grow.” – Dr. Carol Dweck
