Getaway Trip Suggestions

Lots of good choices in Central America that would offer outstanding experience without breaking the bank or traveling too many time zones…Cancun, Belize, Costa Rica, etc. Myan ruins, hiking, beach, snorkeling. The Caribbean is always a good choice…just a bit slow for me…and more troublesome to get to. Cayman, Jamaica, Puerto Rico are the easiest and least costly. For longer distances…we loved Buenos Aries…Amsterdam is fun a relatively cheap and easy to get to.

I've been to a few places in the Caribbean and only one I would go back to. We went to Caneel Bay on our honeymoon and it was awesome, but expensive. Don't go to St. Lucia, fun - but too far. Don't go to Nassau, Cancun = dirty; Key West = boring & gay. I would look at the Royal Hideaway which is an hour or 2 drive from Cancun. You can get to Cancun direct from Memphis. I forgot who told me about it, but a couple of guys said it was awesome, easy to get to, and reasonable on the wallet.

We went to Little Dix Bay in the British Virgin Islands for our honeymoon. It was expensive, but awesome. I would recommend it if it is in your price range for the trip.

Not knowing your budget I would offer the following with a 4-5 day stay in order of luxury/romantic/nice: One and Only, Paradise Island, Bahamas - your time will be off-season. May get a better deal in Sept (remember its hurricane season everywhere you go). Cancun - Ritz Carlton or Le Meridien. Isla Mujeres (across the bay) - Casa Rolandi. Playa del Carmen - Fairmont Mayakoba or Moroma. All will be off-season. You'll have to check. I've done this too many times. These two are the best picks for short duration trips. The flight time is reasonable and you don't change planes.

Rebecca and I went to St. Kitts for our honeymoon. St. Kitts is about the furthermost islands in the Bahamas. We flew direct to Puerto Rico and then direct to St. Kitts. We stayed at the Marriott Resort, which is the only nice resort hotel on the island. The rest of the island is pretty rustic. There are some shops and restaurants downtown and on Sunset Beach. We were there in January and I felt as though we had the island to ourselves. The Marriott was nice and had everything you need on site. 3 or 4 restaurants, several big pools. There was a golf course across from the Marriott but it looked like Overton at best and the wind was rocking at 25-35 mph- the pictures of the golf course on the Marriott website look better so they may have improved it. The only time we left the property was to go into town one day to shop and grab some lunch. Cruise ships make a stop there so the downtown will fill up from time to time. If you are looking for rest, quiet in a tropical setting it is a good choice. Not much to do except hang out and chill. If I remember correctly there was a service that would take you by boat to their sister island Nevis. We stayed in one of the outlaying buildings close to the beach. It was nice. I don’t recall the price. I got away with using points for my flights and stay at Marriott. While on property food and such was not cheap but reasonable for a resort.
