Course Description:

This workshop is presented by the University of Houston College of Technology Engineering Technology Department in collaboration with Texas A&M Advanced Telecommunications Laboratory and sponsored by the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA). This EDA-sponsored course is a one-day HANDS-ON workshop that introduces students to how Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) works. This workshop is the same given to senior-level students in the Computer Engineering Technology program in the University of Houston. The VoIP workshop covers VoIP in detail including voice signal processing and digitalization, encoding schemes, IP packetization, PPP and Ethernet framing, issues of delivering voice over the IP network, delay and jitter, security issues related to VoIP. Students will also learn about the protocols used in VoIP including H.323, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), to install a SIP server using open-source Asterisk and Cisco Call Manager, to configure hard and soft IP phones, to configure gateways and IPBX to connect to the Public Switched Internet Network (PSTN). In addition, students will be introduced to concepts of Unified Communication Services, review VoIP products in the market today and study some return-on-investment (ROI) strategies.
