Genitive endings for masculine singular nouns


Always -a

1. males

            professor – profesora, lekarz – lekarza, student – studenta, actor - aktora

2. masculine animated nouns

            koń – konia, lew – lwa, pies - psa

3. masculine inanimate nouns – 4 groups:

·         mushrooms: borowik – borowika[1]

·         currencies: dolar – dolara

·         cigarettes: camel – camela

·         cars: fiat – fiata

For the rest of it – the other masculine inanimate nouns, things are a bit more complicated, meaning there is no rule so it’s mostly a matter of learning by speaking rather then by finding out & memorizing the rule.

-a or -u

You could of course get into very technical details and take a look at the type of consonant at the end of the word (hard consonants + u // soft consonants and functionally soft consonants + a), but of course there are exceptions to this rule and you’d have to take a close look at phonetics, which might make things even worse. So here are some guidelines:

uncountable nouns: piasek - piasku

tools: nóż – noża, komputer – komputera

!!! tools ending in –graf, -skop, -fon take –u: telegrafu, teleskopu, telefonu

collective nouns: las – lasu

months of the year (with the exception of luty)

styczeń – stycznia

marzec – marca

kwiecień – kwietnia

maj – maja

czerwiec – czerwca

lipiec – lipca

sierpień – sierpnia

wrześień – września

październik – października

listopad – listopada

grudzień - grudnia

abstract nouns: pomysł - pomysłu

body parts: nos – nosa, żołądek - żołądka

nouns of foreign origin: hotel – hotelu, tramwaj – tramwaju

nouns referring to time, weight, measure: miesiąc – miesiąca, tydzień – tygodnia, kilogram – kilograma

!!! rok - roku

cities: Rzym – Rzymu, Budapeszt – Budapesztu, and all those ending in –wald, -grad, -gród: Leningrad – Leningradu

cities: Kraków – Krakowa, Poznań – Poznania, Berlin – Berlina,

nouns ending in –ek (not diminutives!): budynek – budynku, rachunek – rachunku

·         days of the week:

poniedziałek – poniedziałku

wtorek – wtorku

czwartek – czwartku

piątek - piątku

nouns ending in –ak, -nik or diminutives ending in –ek, -ik, : ziemniak – ziemniaka, podręcznik – podręcznika / stolik - stolika
