ROCK CYCLE LAB GLOSSARY

PROCESS - a series of events that occur to cause change.  Example- heat and pressure are processes that turn igneous rocks into metamorphic rocks. 

CHARACTERISTICS - an aspect of an object that is used to define or identify the object.  Example:  Layers are a characteristic of many metamorphic rocks. 

PARENT ROCK/MATERIAL - The rock or material that a rock comes from.  Example:  The parent material of all igneous rocks is magma, because all igneous rocks are formed when magma cools down and solidifies.
