Lisbon Community School PTO MEETING MINUTES
June 10, 2009 (pending approval at September 2009 Mtg)
1. Welcome: Meeting Called to order by PTO President Bobbi Hill at 6:35 p.m. Meeting Held in Room 36, French Classroom. Introductions were made as there were new members present. In attendance: Bobbi Hill, Angela Shambarger, Candace Barrett, Carlene Iverson, Kate Race, Christine Maney, Monica Millhime, Pam Shane, DJ Thorne, Jen Libby, Kim Simpson, Lisa Curtis (honorary member and soon-to-be grandma) and a special welcome to our new members: Keall Fry, Amy Scribner, Michelle King.
2. Minutes of May meeting: Approved. Bobbi explained the new minutes process for next year. Kim Simpson, PTO Secretary, has created a google gmail account for PTO and will be posting minutes and other documents online as “google docs”. This will allow multiple individuals to view and make changes to the documents, in particular, committee sign-up forms. There will be a link to this folder on the PTO website. Carlene Iverson reminded everyone that beginning in July, the UNION30 web address and email address would be going away as part of the school consolidation process. They are considering a couple of alternate names but have not settled on one yet. There will be a period after the new system is active where emails will automatically bounce from the old system to the new one.
3. Treasurer’s Report: Candace updated the members on the PTO budget income and expenses. Motion to accept….PASSED
4. Old Business
· Muffins with Mom/Donuts with Dad: Took place on June 6th at the MTM Center. An estimated 125-150 people attended. Within the 1st hour the donuts were gone and both Candace and Bobbi made runs to Dunkin Donuts for more. We went through 9 dozen donuts and 4 dozen muffins from Tim Hortons. They gave us a 10% discount. An additional 6 dozen donuts were purchased locally at Dunkin Donuts. Small pots of flowers were given out to families until about 9:30. Flowers were purchased from Lisbon Florist. Success was attributed also to the fact that it was LJAL picture day. Many families came in uniform and PTO Dads at the photo area were encouraging folks to come to the MTM. Amy Austin said she would work with PTO to coordinate the events again next year.
5. New Business
· Committee sign ups: Sign Up now for Committees for next year: Contact Bobbi if you have questions about a committee or are interested in chairing. Sign ups will be online soon. New committees for this year include YEARBOOK and TRUNK-OR-TREATING.
· Open House volunteers: September 10th at 6 pm is the LCS Open House this fall. We are looking for volunteers to help staff the PTO information table. Contact Bobbi if you are interested. Volunteers would not need to be at the table the whole time. Will have folks in shifts so that parents can also participate in the open house. We will look into getting Junior Volunteers to watch children but there may not be a location in the school for this service that night.
· Fundraisers for 2009-10: We have already started the process for the Gift Card fundraiser. Paperwork has been submitted and Pam Shane (Coordinator) has begun identifying those cards which we will just have on hand for immediate sale (Shaws, Dunkin Donuts etc…) Again, the gift card sales will take place all year and a % of each card cost will be donated to LCS PTO (amounts vary according to business). Bobbi and Pam are also looking to see if any local businesses will purchase the cards and have them for sale in their business. More information will be available online.
o Apparel Sales: (early spring fundraiser) Bobbi and Jessica Maloy have also been able to talk to the Lisbon Boosters Club and have been assured that our apparel sale will not interfere with their efforts. Jess Maloy (coordinator) and Bobbi will be meeting soon with Geiger to put together a package for next year.
o Wilburs: Late spring. More information available next Fall.
o Art Sale? : Chrissy Maney also brought in information about another potential fundraiser that uses an individual child’s own art to create and then sell items such as mugs, aprons, calendars etc…This is used at th school she teaches and raises thousand of dollars. Two other members indicated their pre-schools also used it with a lot of success. Carlene will discuss with the art teachers and one of the new members will check into a local company her pre school has used.
6. Principal’s Perspective – Carlene or Kate: The School Budget was rejected by the voters on Tuesday by 42 votes. Only 6% of registered voters voted. Budget will now need to be reviewed and reduced again and won’t be able to be put before the voters before July. How can PTO as an organization support and promote the importance of voting? (Promote the need to get out and vote without supporting an agenda). The School Committee meets every other Monday and meetings are re-broadcast that Thursday on local cable station. Can we work on advertising this so that the community can keep more informed?
Kate Race informed members that they have sold 251 year books and only have 7 left. Special kudos were given for the excellent work of Michelle Huston who helped the student council create the books this year. HOWEVER, Student Council and Michelle really need a committee of adults to work with the group. This is a great keepsake for students and turned out to be a great fundraiser for Student Council. They will be purchasing a new swing set for the playground with the proceeds. Interested parents can sign up on the PTO Yearbook committee.
Also, there is NO truth to the rumor heard around the Austen dinner table that Ms. Race is retiring. Mr. Thorne is not going to be taking her place as Vice Principle. Both he and Mrs. Race are very happy as they are and will be staying in their current positions next year.
7. Monica’s Moment: (To be read VERY fast to mimic the speed with which Monica gives her reports) 7 New volunteers were trained this evening and 3 of them, parents of incoming Kindergarteners are here at PTO tonight. Yay! We are approaching 800 community volunteers and Monica believes there is a good chance that by next year’s volunteer banquet we will have reached 1000. Also, she has met with a representative of Cold Water Creek of Brunswick who is Very interested in having their store be one of Lisbon’s volunteer partners. Monica passed out the NEW Lisbon Parent Organization, School Committee, Serve New England, and Family Movie Nights Schedule for the 2009-2010 year. Monica reported back on the Family Movie night success from last month. Even without real advertising, there were over 65 people at the movie. The next movie will be Thursday, June 18th at 6 pm at the Auburn Flagship Theater. This month’s movie will be Hotel for Dogs. Contact Monica if you have any questions.
8. Open discussion: questions, comments, concerns, or ideas: This Saturday at the Durham Rod and Gun Club: Jake’s Day (a Jake is a male , juvenile turkey). There will be many events including a fishing derby. Events begin at 8 am at the Rod and Gun Club located on Rte 136 on the right hand side of the road heading towards Freeport. Another summer opportunity was announced: Kids Bowl Free summer program where registered kids can bowl for free all summer and only have the cost of shoes. Families can also register. Go to kidsbowlfree.com and select Maine to see local participating lanes. The closest one is at Spare Time Lanes in Brunswick. Yankee Lanes in Portland also is a participant.
As a reminder, meetings next year will be the 3rd Monday of every month at 6 pm. The first PTO meeting will be August 31st.
9. Adjourn: Meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
Next Meeting August 31, 2009 at 6:00pm in Cafetorium
