iPhone Wishlist

This page contains all the things I think are “wrong” with the iPhone. Before reading them, you must know I am very fond of the iPhone and as a matter of fact I have never regretted any of my Apple purchases (Mac mini, iPod Nano, iPhone, Macbook Pro), apart from the dissapointing airtight earbuds. I generally think Apple products are designed, manufactured and packaged with the utmost care and with the user in mind.

Ok so what’s wrong with the iPhone? Here’s my list (ranging from minor irritation to major bugs)

This list is based on iPhone firmware 2.1.

Exchange
[EX-01] Can not connect with multiple Exchange servers or accounts.
[EX-02] Exchange overtakes your phone, which is very intrusive. At work we have Exchange, and at home I have iCal. I want to be able to have both calendars on my phone, without complicated tricks.
[EX-03]
Seperate Exchange address book contacts should be in a seperate Address books group

Email
[EM-01]
“Bcc me” should be an option per account on the phone
[EM-02]
Signature seperately configurable per email account
[EM-03]
Allow simple HTML in signatures.
[EM-04]
Allow Mail application to work in landscape mode to cater for wider mails.
[EM-05]
When having multiple mail accounts, the inbox should be optionally “merged” as in Apple mail bij selecting the common inbox folder
[EM-06]
When in a specific inbox, a “home” button should take you to the accounts overview screen to easily select another mailbox
[EM-07]
When deleting an item, the trashcan should shake after closing the lid (like in the Photo application)
[EM-08]
Proper outgoing mail queue. When sending a mail with an image, I do not want to have to wait sending the next image.

Address Book
[AB-01]
Add Groups and smart groups
[AB-02]
Address book application on OSX needs overhaul, editting contacts is very un-intuitive and is not in sync with the other Apple applications “feel”.

Calendar

[CAL-01]
In the Calendar, turning to landscape mode should show a “week view” (7 day views next to eachother, like in iCal).
[CAL-02]
In calendar, swiping the screen should move to the next day, week or month, depending on the view.
[CAL-03]
In calendar, pinch should work, zooming in and out of days, weeks, monhts. So when you’re in month view, pinching should send you to week view. Pinching again should be day view.
[CAL-04]
Calendar Day view should be scalable (pinch?) so the whole day fits on the screen
[CAL-05]
Calendar list view should also show empty days. This can be a configuration option (show empty days in listview).
[CAL-06]
Tapping anywhere on an apointment in Calendar should take you back to the previous view (same as back button top left). This would match the photo viewer where tapping a photo brings back the controls.
[CAL-07]
The colored dots indicating the different calendars should match the colors configured in iCal. In my case, I make work calendars in iCal green, and private calendars red. On my iPhone, they all have random colors from Purple to Orange which have absolutely no relation to the colors I configured in iCal. At least make the colors configurable on the iPhone.
[CAL-08]
In Calendar, in stead of a colored dot, the background of the events should have the calendars color. This frees some space on the left of the list for more text. Or: Vertical bar on the left/right, pixels wide in the calendar color in stead of the bullet. The bars between calendars should not touch to get better visual separation.
[CAL-09]
The fontsize of the Calendar list view should be configurable, and the text should be wrapped like the preview function in mail.
[CAL-10]
Calendar should be able to show week numbers (configurable for American or European weeknumbers).
[CAL-11]
Ability to move items between calendars by going into an appointment, and selecting a different calendar from a dropbox/picker.
[CAL-12]
When putting reminders on an “all day” event, the “n days before” reminders wake you up in the middle of the night. The time at which the “n days before” reminders are fired should be configurable, or at least be during the day time.
[CAL-13]
In Calendar, when adding an event, add current location from gps as default Location of the appointment.

iPod mode
[IP-01]
In iPod/itunes mode, music Genius should be configurable to use a (smart) playlist as input, in stead of the complete library
[IP-02]
In iPod mode, pressing “next” on a connected carkit should not place focus on the ipod application. For instance, you’re driving with the Google maps application on the screen. When you press “next” on the carkit to skip a song, suddenly the Google maps app closes and your iPod app starts. This is very unpractical because now you have to take your hands off the wheel and navigate back to the Google app.
[IP-03]
Option to download podcasts based on subscriptions, over wifi or 3G. Push back into iTunes if not already downloaded there (like apps bought on phone)

Phone mode
[PH-01]
When in a phone call, the audio should gbe able to be routed through connected carkit speakers (configurable)
[PH-02]
When clicking on a contact in Phone mode, iPhone directly starts the call (as in favourites). In stead of the whole row being clickable, a phone icon should be shown on that contact. This prevents accidental calling of the person in stead of viewing the contact.
[PH-03]
Offline queued SMS. When there’s no network, or the phone is in airplane mode, type an SMS and hit “send”. As soon as the phone detects a network, the pending SMS-es are sent.

Camera
[CA-01]
Camera startup time is too slow
[CA-02]
After taking a picture, a button “mail this picture” should be available to immediately mail the last image
[CA-03]
Orientation information should be stored in screenshots. When making screenshots in landscape mode, the resulting images should also be correctly oriented.

Keyboard
[KY-01]
Configuration option to switch off keyboard autocorrect. (the T9 like suggestion feature)

Retail experience
[RT-01] Sell iPhone simlock free in all countries. This speeds up sales (i’ve been waiting 37 minutes for the Apple store guy to get my T-mobile contract.) and allows me to select my own network (t-mobile sucks in holland.)

Safari
[SF-01]
When positioning the cursor in an URL with the magnifying glass, it dissapears out of the screen because it is too close to the top. It should magnetically move to left or right, depending on the free space.
[SF-02]
When editting a selection box in a form in Safari, switching from portrait to landscape mode is not supported.
