Tikkun Magazine
Editorial Intern at Tikkun Magazine
Berkeley
Application deadline: None specified
Posted: March 3, 2009
Magazines & Newsletters posting
Editorial interns at Tikkun gain hands-on experience in
magazine editing.
At Tikkun -- unlike at many other national magazines,
where interns often find themselves fetching coffee and making photocopies --
editorial interns play a central role in evaluating submissions and proofing
each issue of the magazine. Editorial interns review every submission that
comes in, bringing promising articles to the attention of the editorial staff.
They also read articles from past issues of Tikkun and summarize these pieces
in short "teasers" that are published as part of the magazine's
online archive. This internship is very selective and has the potential to
launch students into careers in magazine journalism.
Editorial interns may have the opportunity to publish an
article, but we make no guarantees interns' submissions are subjected to the
same strict standards as any other submissions to the magazine.

apply, see:

posts to which they think Tikkun's daily site should respond. They will play a
central role in finding and managing the content on the magazine's new
multimedia blog site, which is currently under construction. To support our
efforts to recruit a team of professional bloggers, Web editorial interns
become intimately familiar with the world of spiritual and political
journalists, academics, and bloggers. They spend hours searching the Web for
articles and videos about tikkun-ish topics to which our site should link.
Those Web interns who are familiar enough with the magazine to have fully
grasped its worldview and who demonstrate outstanding reporting and writing
skills may eventually be invited to blog, as well.

Tikkun Magazine
Art Intern at Tikkun Magazine
Berkeley
Application deadline: None specified
Posted: March 3, 2009
Magazines & Newsletters posting
Art interns at Tikkun engage deeply with the question of
how to illustrate articles about politics, social change, and spirituality.
They work on our national magazine and on our website, generating illustration
ideas and conducting image research. They will play a central role in finding
imagery for use on our new multimedia blog site, which is currently under
construction. The site will feature regular photo essays and art galleries.
In the art world these days, it is quite difficult to
find images that are not only artistically strong but also have social content.
We need images that critique the pretensions and cruelties of our materialistic
and self-centered culture. We also need artwork about peace, spirituality,
hope, and social transformation that is NOT sappy, corny, or part of a New Age
aesthetic. Interns are encouraged to scour museums, galleries, artists'
websites, and online image libraries to find these sorts of images.
On the print side, the design process at Tikkun is a
dynamic collaboration between the magazine's editors in Berkeley and the Design
Action collective in Oakland. Art interns work on a part-time unpaid basis with
the editors in Berkeley, where they develop relationships with freelance
artists, obtain permission to reprint images, and brainstorm ways to illustrate
the complex concepts often explored by articles in the magazine and on the
magazine's website. Interns with strong art skills may also be encouraged to
try their hand at creating original illustrations to be considered for
publication in the magazine.

Internships are full-time, last up to four months and pay $812 per week.

JOURNALISM & HUMAN RIGHTS
1. Journalism & Democracy
In many countries, journalists are silenced or shut down
so journalism is rarely fiery or investigative.
We have some fascinating journalism placements that bolster democracy.
1a. Nepal has just made a fascinating transition from monarchy to Maoist rebels to democracy.
We believe that this is one of the most fascinating countries to do fiery free-lance pieces;
while simultaneously working with the newspaper to get an insiders'
view.
1b. Sierra Leone has emerged from a cruel civil war. We believe that reporting on its recovery
is as important as reporting on the (past) war. Most Sierra Leoneans are passionately committed
to prevent another war. Come report (free lance) on the civil initiatives to create a new society.
Simultaneously, work with newspaper to get inside view of how journalists must work.
2. Print, Broadcast & Radio Journalism: Cameroon
Here is an exciting, more unfettered experience of journalism in Africa.
This gives a glimpse of the possibilities of where journalism in Africa is heading.
2a. Journalism & Women
Female journalists on staff are eager to work with experienced journalists & interns,
to cover stories that advance women: girl child education; societal abandonment at widowhood;
how villages must walk for miles when they go into labor...the lack of facilities; polygamy.....
3. Human Rights: Congolese Refugees
are again fleeing the eastern Congo. We need your help with human rights education work.
Critical to gain credibility gracefully. Informal works better.
The goal is empowerment & capacity building. Turn questions back to them rather than you having answer.
Experience as refugee &/or with Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed are valuable.
Education in human rights, international relations, Africa studies, journalism & media, the arts (dance, drama,
music, art, carving), social work, & psychology helpful. French is a must.
Finally, teach villagers the importance of freedom of expression & freedom of the press.
4. Teach writing in India
Our Gandhian community & school in India seeks a creative writing teacher.
NGOabroad specializes in harnessing your skills to humanitarian need.
These are volunteer positions. (But we also help people into international
careers.)
Applications accepted on a rolling basis. No end date.

EDITORIAL INTERNSHIPS
What we offer
The Bay Guardian offers opportunities for its interns to develop reporting skills and to write numerous articles. We also provide workshops for interns on city politics, research and writing skills, and freelancing.
Interns advance at their own pace. Although there are no guarantees, interns should leave the paper writing better and faster.
What we expect
Interns begin the four-month program by writing one Superlist (a guide to interesting, often offbeat services and locations in the Bay Area), then move on to more complex research and writing projects.
News interns help staff reporters with research and news gathering and develop their own short articles. They cover events, write blog entries, and in time some may write longer features.
For those whose interests lean more toward arts and entertainment, there are four slots open for A&E interns , who write previews and short reviews. These interns are hired based on writing skills and their knowledge of music, film, visual art, theater, or any combination of the above.
We also offer three Culture and Web intern positions. The Web intern will help post and edit the Web site, write blog posts, and otherwise assist the Web editor. The food intern will focus on food and drink-related news, events, and reviews for special sections, blogs, and culture stories.
The
style intern will focus on fashion and shopping-related news, events, and reviews for special sections, blogs, and culture stories. Proven experience in these areas and familiarity with blogging is a plus.
Although the focus for all interns is on reporting, they do have some administrative responsibilities. These include sorting some departmental mail, distributing faxes, and occasional typing or data entry jobs.
Internships require a commitment of two full days each week (during regular business hours) for four months. Interns' schedules will be arranged at an orientation prior to the internship. All internships are voluntary and unsalaried.

Fall internship: begins first week in September (Deadline: Postmark August
10)

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Education Reporter
Little Rock
Application deadline: None specified
Posted: November 20, 2008
Newspapers & Wire Services posting
Our newspaper, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, seeks an education writer. We give high priority to the coverage of education, sending reporters wherever the story is happening -- at the state Capitol, federal court, a charter school in the Delta. The field is as wide as a reporter's own curiosity and energy. Our two-person education desk covers everything from preschool to higher education. The reporters cover three local school districts, two of which are the largest in the state. But as a statewide newspaper, we also track policy issues emanating from such agencies as the Arkansas Department of Education and Arkansas Department of Higher Education. The state's recent governors -- Bill Clinton, Jim Guy Tucker, Mike Huckabee and now Mike Beebe -- have made education a major component of their administrations. We place a high premium on education stories, which most often land on Page One or on the metro section cover.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the state's largest newspaper, has a daily circulation of 176,275 and Sunday circulation of 270,477.
