What can you say about sentences and syntax?Sentence Purpose- Declarative - makes a statement
- Interrogative - asks a question
- Imperative - gives a command
- Exclamatory - expresses strong feeling
Sentence Structure- Simple - single, independent clause
- Compound - two or more independent clauses, joined with a comma + conjuction or with a semicolon
- Complex - single independent clause, one or more dependent clauses
- Compound-Complex - two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause
Sentence Types
- loose - main thought is near the beginning of the sentence, explanatory material is added as needed. Most common type.
- balanced - two clauses are closely paired so that the meaning of each clause is reflected off the other. Sentences in parallel structure are balanced.
- periodic - postpones the most crucial or surprising idea until the end.
- cumulative - the general idea is in the main clause, and is given greater precision with modifiers as the sentence unfolds.
Sentence patterns- natural order - Subject-verb-complement
- inverted order - subject follows the verb (questions, and Yoda-speak)
