SSI Political Engagement Coordinator
OSU Student Sustainability Initiative

Position Description:
The Political Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for actively participating in OSU projects that engage students in the political process of building a more sustainable and just society. He/she will be an employee of the SSI, receiving direction and supervision from the SSI Program Facilitator, and the ASOSU Environmental Affairs Task Force Director. He/she will work with other SSI staff in the Student Sustainability Center (SSC).

Responsibilities:

Help students run and facilitate meetings
Be a liaison between the SSI and student groups, OSU departments, and community groups (e.g. ASOSU, OSU Government Relations Office, government staff, local elected officials, legislators, etc)
Update or bottom line updating the Political Engagement Eco-wiki pages Engage students in sustainability activities
- Projects
- Events
- Campaigns
- Other activities
Help develop a sense of identity for students within the SSI Further SSI's mission
Recruit and train potential future staff of SSI
Hold regular office hours at the SSC Regularly meet with the SSI Coordinator
Attend staff meetings as requested
Attend and recruit for the Student Leadership in Sustainability ALS class
Develop and maintain partnerships between individuals, organizations and SSI Link students with resources, contacts and skills to assist in the success of their projects
Cooperate with the ASOSU Environmental Affairs Taskforce Director and other ASOSU staff to engage students in Campus, State, and Federal political action
Be responsible for gathering information, tracking legislation, and conducting research on issues and policies concerning environmental issues
Work 10-15 hours/week during the 2009-10 academic year

Qualifications

The Political Engagement Coordinator will have

Project planning experience
Great people skills
Experience working with volunteers
Creativity
Awareness of various campus and community groups
Have an understanding and passion for sustainability
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Initiative
Leadership skills
Attended Sierra Student Coalition's Environmental Leadership Training, "SPROG", or the equivalent (Which SSI will provide funding to attend during the summer before start date)
Ability to work as part of a team
Have an understanding of political organizations and how to navigate them
Be aware of different approaches to creating sustainable and just political systems

Employment Dates & Wages:

Start date: week of Sept. 28, 2009. Duration: 2009-10 academic year. The employee will start at $8.40 per hour.

Terms and Conditions:

Applicants must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher, be enrolled in at least 6 credits at OSU during the employment period, and must not be on academic probation. The employee is expected to affirm and uphold University policies that help create and maintain a welcoming and equal opportunity campus.
