Board and Committee Meeting
October 2, 2008
Call to order, opening prayer, introductions. President Pam O’Toole called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.. Mr. Mamara opened the meeting with a prayer.
Approval of September meeting minutes. Mrs. Diana Day Ivanjack, PTG secretary, circulated a draft of the September meeting minutes. Mrs. Ivanjack reviewed the draft minutes. Upon a motion duly made, seconded, the September meeting minutes were approved.
President’s report. Mrs. O’Toole, PTG President, provided the President’s report. She noted that the hospitality committee is still in need of a chair. Mrs. Lira offered to chair that committee.
Mrs. O’Toole noted that the spring break 2009 Carnival Cruise fundraiser had been cancelled due to a change in the cruise company’s schedule. She thanked Mrs. Sandy for her efforts in working on this fundraiser.
Mrs. O’Toole reported on the Sally Foster fundraiser and noted that the selling to date was below goal. She reminded PTG members that the school is able to sell Sally Foster year-round through the Sally Foster website.
She noted that the school directories should be available the second week of October.
Mrs. O’Toole provide an update of the Team Green recycling effort. Large blue cans will be coming to the school – they are to be used for kids to recycle cans and bottles which are brought to school. In addition, Team Green is partnering with Urban Corps for a larger-scale recycling effort, pursuant to which families can bring recyclable materials from home. Profits from this effort will be shared between Team Green and Urban Corps.
She outlined a new room parent initiative pursuant to which room parents may elect to collect $20 from each child’s family at the beginning of the school year, and then use those funds in lieu of collecting smaller amounts throughout the school year.
Mrs. O’Toole requested that any flyers which are attached to the Tuesday Treasure also be emailed (PDF’d) to her so that she can distribute them electronically.
She noted that a used uniform sale will be upcoming. We have a large inventory of used uniforms which we are anxious to sell. Any which are not sold will be provided to charity.
Mrs. O’Toole noted that she is planning to organize a meeting for interested parents to discuss fundraising ideas. Time and date to be announced.
Principal’s report. Mr. Mamara reviewed upcoming calendar events, including the ITBS testing period (Oct 13 – 23), the end of the first quarter (Oct 29). Due to Halloween falling on a Friday, mass that week will be held on Thursday, Oct 30, rather than Friday. The Halloween carnival is Friday, Oct. 31 from 10:15 – noon. Report cards will be distributed November 4th, and parent teacher conferences held during the week of November 10 – 14th. There is no school on November 11th (Veterans’ Day).
Mr. Mamara reported that the accredidation process is on course. The faculty has been making progress on the document, and another stakeholder meeting is being planned for the near future.
First Vice President/Room parent report. Mrs. Kristi Inzunza, First Vice President and room parent Chair, presented the room parent chair report. She provided an update as to the hot lunch program and noted that each grade is being asked to provide parent volunteers for one calendar month. Mrs. Inzunza noted that November 1st is the deadline for room parents to submit their auction basket and live auction ideas.
Treasurer’s Report. Mrs. Sandy provided the Treasurer’s report. She reviewed the draft budget for the 2008-2009 school year, and discussion ensued.
Committee Reports. Mrs. O’Toole asked various committee chairs to provide reports.
Art Cards. Mrs. Massa discussed this year’s Art Card program. Tables will be set up during the hoe down so that families can preview the products that are available.
Hoedown. Mrs. O’Toole provided a Hoedown update. The Hoedown is not a fundraiser, but is designed to be revenue neutral to the PTG.
Red Ribbon Week. Mrs. Perry reviewed the activities planned for Red Ribbon Week, which is a drug awareness campaign.
Halloween Carnival. This year the Halloween carnival will feature a DJ, an obstacle course, an environmental dunk tank and a pumpkin and cake contest.
New Business. Mrs. Sandy presented information about a potential parenting workshop. Discussion ensued regarding holding the workshop at the Academy, during a weeknight, and having day care and pizza available for parents and their children. There is a cost of $150 for the speaker. The workshop facilitator is available to speak on a variety of topics. The group discussed the topics which might be of the most interest. Mrs. O’Toole offered to solicit more input from parents regarding which topic should be featured at the workshop.
Adjournment. Mrs. O’Toole adjourned the meeting at 8:00 p.m.
