Organizational Profile


Mission Statement

Free IT Athens is a group of like-minded citizens who realize that computers are a necessary component of everyday life. We believe that everyone deserves access to low-cost computer equipment and computer-related services. Our goal is to provide access to information technology resources to Athens-Clarke County residents and organizations. We also aim to create well informed advocates in free software and open information technology.

Vision Statement

Free IT Athens aims to increase the availability of free and open information technology and provide individuals with the experience and knowledge necessary to become both comfortable with IT and proficient in its usage. We seek to ensure that all people in the Athens  Clarke County area have a friend that knows about technology and that information technology is free and/ or open. 



Goals and Strategies

Goals are identified from having taken a wide look around the outside of the organization (an external analysis) and careful look inside the nonprofit (an internal analysis), and then identifying what are the most important issues to address. Appendix C includes information to organize this analysis.

Goals, Strategies, and Action Plans

Goal # 1 Advocate for free and open technology for individuals and community organizations in the Athens-Clarke county area.

Strategy # 1.1 Hold open hours for technical support that are free to those who use open software.

Strategic analysis includes taking a careful look at the external environment and the internal environment of the organization, and then identifying any critical issues or priorities from this analyses. It is from these priorities that strategic goals often are identified.

Opportunities and Threats

Opportunities for the organization

-MIS/CS students as interns or volunteers.

-Space with BikeAthens.

-Athens Tech council (city)/funding.

-OneAthens.

-Publicity.

-Athens Tech (college)


Threats facing the organization:

-Common Ground moving current space.

-Transient volunteer population.

Invest

-Pursue/recruit potential volunteers out of the MIS/CS department and Athens Tech. Hold information/ Q&A sessions.
