What is "developerHappinessDays" (tag: "dev8D"):

Developer Happiness Days is JISC's way of saying "thank you" to developers for all the hard work they do.  Of course the question is: how do you show your gratitude to a developer who spends all their free time on a computer?  Well other than beer, bowling and video games (which dev8D will have plenty of) we provide them with the gift of more development skills!  It's pretty simple: a.) give them the opportunity to show off the work they do to someone who can appreciate it (other developers), b.) provide them with the opportunity to learn new frameworks, languages and techniques; and c.) throw in the ultimate VIP rock-n-roll developer barcamp... RESULT: happy developers building applications faster than ever!  Developers work better when happy and when the cost is zero to attend there really is no reason why you shouldn't be sending your entire team to JISC's "Developer Happiness Days"!  Space is limited so book now!

Day 0: Pre Event Workshops for Newbies (Monday 9th Feb 2009)

New to programming, technophiles, need to learn a new language this year...Come one come all!  Developer Happiness Days will begin with a day for Newbies.  You've heard the rumors ("develop and launch an app in a day", "a framework that even a gorilla could use").  We've got three exciting code laboratories that will provide the quick and dirty path to what development is all about: get it done!  And for those of you going for the big prize at the Developer Decathlon this will give you time to get a head start!

MAIN EVENT - DEVELOPER DECATHLON

Day 0.1: Conference Keynote and Opening Ceremony (Monday Evening 9th Feb 2009)

The conference gets kicked off with a bang (well no fireworks, but a guitar hero geek rock band yes!) and some inspirational speakers who will ask that all important question: "are we doing things the right way", and more importantly "how can we innovate to do better"!

This session will also explain the instructions for the Developer Decathlon and how the prizes can be won!  We'll also provide you with all the passwords, secrets and treasure maps for navigating the labyrinth that is The Bloomsbury Colleges' University of London campus.  So don't be late!

After this opening ceremony we'll begin the festivities by having the first barcamp of dev8D (with drinks and nibbles of course) to help get people started on their way to fame and fortune!

Day 1 & 2 Developer Decathlon (Main Event) Tuesday 10th & Wednesday 11th of February

The Developer Decathlon is the premier event at JISC's Developer Happiness Days.  It will provide an open forum for developers to work together in building applications that reach across the systems that the developer is stuck within on a day to day basis and encourage the future of Academia.

Day I of the Decathlon (Tues 10th) is an opportunity for developers to get to know one another and to pitch the best of their ideas to one another.  Essentially, the first day will be a massive TalkShop: flipcharts, whiteboards and smashing of brains together will be the order of the day.  We'll keep the caffeine flowing and the ideas flying.  By the end of the day we expect to have solved the world's problems, however we'll need to decide which solutions are the ones we should pursue in Day 2 of the Decathlon.  To do this we'll be implementing a peer voting system throughout the day for all the PaperProtoypes produced in the TalkShops.

Day II of the Decathlon (Wed 11th) will see the formation of teams based on the Day I TalkShops.  Teams will begin a rapid prototyping process whereby they bring together wireframes, interfaces, systems, code and anything else to demonstrate the purpose of their application.  Keep in mind the final prototype to be submitted to the competition does not have to be "working code" (though bonus points if it is), rather the essence of the application created should be how well the team works together in bringing the various components together to produce their killerApp.  Submission of entries must be as a screencast with working interfaces (even if the code isn't functional), no architecture astronauting (aka bullet points) please!  All competition entries will be due at the end of the week.  Prizes will be given in excess of $10,000USD to the winners!

BowlCamp at the King Pin Suite! (Evening of Wednesday the 11th) BowlCamp is our version of a BarCamp but on geek steroids! Basically, we've rented out an exclusive bowling suite, hired a bunch of video games and thrown in the food and drinks to boot.  Basically, it is about you, having fun, talkin' tech and chillin' out.  Enjoy.

Day 3 Community Collaboration Project Day - Draft date: Thursday 12th Feb 2009

Day 3 is all about bringing all of us back into our local communities, i.e. the systems we work with on a day-to-day basis.  Each community will provide an opportunity for community specific projects to pitch their ideas to fellow community members.  We also hope that by splitting the day in two there will be opportunities for other communities to visit one another.  We'll finish off the entire event by bringing everyone together for a final awards party.

If you are interested in putting on your own community specific event or workshop you can contact us and we'll provide a free venue in Bloosmbury to hold your own event (you'll need to cover your own food and drink but the room is on us).  On average rooms will hold up to 25 people, though larger rooms can be provided on a first come first serve basis.
