Letter from the Executive Director

We are starting 2008 with a sense of urgency! It's time to get the house remodeled, the construction started and the doors open!

We know that without deadlines, timelines and specific vision and purpose, we procrastinate and take care of more immediate needs. This need is immediate! Patients and their caregivers are waiting for us. We know that transplant patients have specific needs, and it’s true that Restoring Hope Transplant House can help to fulfill those needs.

To get the doors open, we need to: acquire the House from the bank and secure a construction loan by mid-April, start construction in May and open the doors in autumn.

The UW Health Transplant Program is one of the premiere programs in the world. Their patients come from all over the country and they have considerable outpatient costs in order to stay in Madison. We are an affordable option. Concerns about a transplant patient’s diet and risk of infection make hotels a difficult choice. Due to dietary restrictions and risks of infection, they need a place to cook food do their laundry, and where they can benefit from other important amenities. Even more important is the fact that these patients are happier, heal faster and go home sooner because they benefit from the community of others sharing the same medical journey.

As a staff of two and a board of directors, we have our sleeves rolled up and we are aggressively getting to work.  Many of you have a cancer transplant or solid organ transplant story or experience. During those times, we were given compassion, encouragement and care from those who went before us. It is our turn now. Can we count on you to join us?  Be a Friend of Restoring Hope Transplant House. Your gift of courage, hope and life are valued, like the legacy of stories we are about to hear.

Gratefully,
Cindy Herbst
