Big Idea

None

Materials Needed:

1. AWANA Rules sign with the following rules printed on it.

a. Respect your leaders and give them five

b. Respect each other.

Setup:

1. Hang the rules sign prominently in your AWANA room.

Lesson

1. Explain the weekly schedule to the children, briefly describing what will happen at during each activity.

a. Opening: pledges (AWANA and American flags), songs (AWANA theme song and one other), announcements

b. Council Time: big group lesson where we’ll learn a bit about God

c. Handbook Time: small groups where kids will work on learning about the Bible and memorizing verses.

d. Game Time: circle games with the big group

2. Explain the rules to the children.

a. Respect leaders... : you respect a leader when you listen to them while they are talking and do what they ask.

b. ...and give ‘em five: to get everyone’s attention, a leader will count to five, holding up their hands and counting on their hands as well. There are five things kids need to do with their bodies when this happens. 1) Listen to the leader with their ears. 2) Look at the leader with their eyes. 3) Stop talking with their mouths. 4) Stop doing anything with their hands and keeping them still. 5) Keep the rest of their body still, not running around.

c. Respect each other: we can do this by listening when others are speaking, being kind to them and being a good sport during game time.

3. Practice “Give ‘em five.” Have the children have a pretend conversation with their neighbor for a few seconds, then count to five, seeing how long it takes to get their attention. Repeat as needed.

4. Ask for examples of what it looks like to respect each other.

5. Explain the team colors and points system.

a. Team colors: children will be divided into one of four color teams. These are the teams you’ll be on during game time. Also, any points you earn on your own during the night will go towards your team’s point total.

b. Points: children can earn points for themselves and their teams by the following:

i. Bringing a Bible: 100 pts

ii. Bringing a friend: 500 pts

iii. Finishing a section in Handbook time: 100 pts.

iv. Bringing a quarter (dues): 100 pts.

v. Bonus (theme weeks): 100 pts.

6. Explain the procedure for bringing your quarter (dues).

a. Try to drop the quarter into the little bowl inside the fish tank. Make it into the bowl and win a candy. A leader must watch you do this.
