“Who is Jesus?”

Big Idea

Jesus is God's son: he's God, he's human, and he's perfect.

Materials Needed:

Lesson

1. Review the big idea from last meeting's lesson: “Everybody’s sinned and nobody’s perfect." by saying it with the children a few times while doing the following motions.

Everybody: gesture arms in a big circle

Sinned: thumbs down

Nobody: Shake head and wave hands back and forth indicating “no”

Perfect: make A-ok signal (hold out one hand, touching tips of thumb and index finger)

2. Ask, "Where have you heard the name Jesus used before?" Explain the following:

    Some of you may have heard the name Jesus spoken at church. Others may go to school with a kid named Jesus, only it's pronounced Hay-zoos. Some of you may have even heard his name spoken as a curse word when someone got really mad about something

    Regardless, Jesus is a pretty important person around the world. Today, we're going to learn a few things the Bible says about him. (Write "Who is Jesus" at the top of the board.) We'll begin by talking about Jesus' father, who's  actually pretty famous.

3. Ask, "Who are some famous people you know about?" Record a few of the children's responses on the board. Explain the following:

    Jesus' dad is even more famous than all the people on this board combined. That's because Jesus' dad is God himself. And this is the first thing that makes Jesus special: he's God's son. (Erase the children's responses from the board and write "God's son" on the board.)

4. Ask, "In what ways are you like your parents? Do you look like them in some way? Do you act like them or appreciate the same things they do?" Explain the following:

    Jesus is like his parents as well. His dad is God, and Jesus is God as well. (Write "He's God" on the board.) They are both God, which can be hard to understand sometimes, but the Bible teaches that Jesus is every bit God as his Father is.

5. Ask, "Who was Jesus' mother?" Explain the following:

    Jesus' mother was Mary. Just like Jesus is like his Father, he's also like his mother. Mary was a human, and Jesus was a human, too. (Write "He's human" on the board.) That means he had a body like you and me. He had feelings like happiness and sadness, he could get hurt when he fell off his bed, and if he got really old, he could die.

6. Ask, "Last meeting we asked, 'Who has sinned?' What's the answer to that question?" Explain the following:

    We said the answer to that question was "Everybody's sinned and nobody's perfect." Well, we have to modify that answer a teeny-tiny bit. We have to add two words to the end: Everybody's sinned and nobody's perfect, except Jesus. That's because, unlike you and me, Jesus never sinned. He's perfect." (Write "He's perfect" on the board.)

7. Explain that the big idea for this week is, "Jesus is God's son: he's God, he's human, and he's perfect." Ask the question, "Who is Jesus?" and have the children repeat the big idea a few times, doing the motions below as you say each word.

God's: point up

Human: point at self

Perfect: make A-ok signal (hold out one hand, touching tips of thumb and index finger)
