SCIS Tutor Guidelines
Thanks to your help, the School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS) is able to offer free tutoring to our students. We encourage the following tutoring formats:
- In person, on campus - preferably in the JCCL lab
- On the phone, using the free TeamViewerdesktop sharing software.
- By email
Guidelines
-
SCIS will not be associated with any in-person tutoring off campus.
-
Any tutoring offered by volunteer tutors associated with SCIS must be for free. You may neither request nor accept payment from students for tutoring.
- Record-keeping is important, so we can show the impact we're having on students. Also, we plan to give awards at the end of the semester for tutors who have given the most of their time. When you finish each tutoring session, please fill out this form:
(put a bookmark on your desktop--it's easy!)
- You may help students debug their assignments, but be careful not to write any code related to the assignment or give the student any code that might be used in the assignment. You should never type on their keyboards.
- If students are having difficulties with a particular class or professor, forward this information to the tutoring coordinator. Do not offer personal opinions about professors to the students. Similarly, do not talk about the students you tutor to anyone but the tutoring coordinator.
