RoU Book of Magic 

 

Magic is the manipulation through of the ether that surrounds the world.  Mages are the crown of those that use Magic. They use all aspects of this form of magic and have been the engineers of its development. Mages have large tomes in which they keep the formulas for their manipulation of the Ether. Mages can learn new spells from scrolls, binding the magic formulas into their tomes for later study and create new scrolls through research. 

 

Binding Spells Into a Spellbook

Spells are learned each level as well as through spell scrolls.  A mage can transcribe spells into their spellbooks from any spells that they find.  They will, of course, not be able to cast the spells until they reach sufficient level.

 

Scroll Creation 

Mages can create scrolls of spells they know and research new spells. To create a scroll, the Mage needs a blank scroll; the reagents needed to focus the Ether; and know the Words of Power to call upon the Ether. The Scroll and the Reagents are placed on a Binding Pentagram and the mage calls on the Ether by uttering the Words of Power. If everything is in order, the magic is bound into the scroll.  If the scroll is of a new spell, the Mage can bind it into his Spellbook. This also costs an amount of XP. 

 

Wand Creation 

Mages can create wands from spells they know. To create a wand, the Mage needs an unenchanted wand; the reagents needed to focus the Ether; and know the Words of Power to call upon the Ether. The wand and the reagents are placed on a Binding Pentagram and the mage calls on the Ether by uttering the Words of Power. If everything is in order, the magic is bound into the wand.  This also costs an amount of XP. 

 

Mana 

Mana is the measure of a person's ability to manipulate the Ether. The greater a person's Mana, the more and more powerful manipulations he can effect with the proper training. Each casting of magic drains a bit from this reserve and rest and relaxation is required to refresh this.

 

Words of Power 

The proper Words of Power are needed in order to cast any Magic spells. Simply having the Reagents on hand are not enough without access to the Ether.

Reagent Use 

The caster of Magic must have the proper Reagents on hand when casting spells. These help to focus the manipulation of the Ether that is drawn by the Words of Power. The Reagents are consumed by the casting. Creating Scrolls and Binding scrolls into Spellbooks requires Reagents for focus as well. 

 

Bat Wing

Generally taken from the grey cave bat, bat wings are preserved with a mineral oil and then dried for ten days.

Black Pearl
Black Pearls are fairly rare, and for the purposes of magic, only perfectly spherical, unblemished Black Pearls suffice. These may be ground into a fine powder - an ignoble, yet potent end for so beautiful a stone. Black Pearl is a common reagent in spells involving magical travel, distance, propulsion or projection. 
 

Blood Moss
This reddish fungus is found mainly in marshlands and swamps. It is known to focus the qualities of speed, animation and locomotion.

Blood Spawn
This reagent is formed in quite an unusual way. Stoneheart, the red rock collected from stalagmites, must be crushed and then combined with the blood of the caster! Blood spawn is an additive reagent that enhances the power of several inner circle offensive spells. Needless to say, perhaps, this reagent is not one to be bought and sold.

Bone
Taken from the bodies of the fallen, bone can be a potent ingredient in many spells dealing with death and control.

 

Brimstone

This is the rock that burns or, more to the point, explodes. A virtually limitless source of power dwells within its etheric composition.


Daemon Bone
Also acquired from the fallen bodies of Daemons, the bone can be used in many summoning and control spells.

Dead Man’s Elbow
Preservation and binding were probably the keywords for the mages when they used this reagent, since trees can be nearly immortal in the eyes of a human. This ancient wood is generally found in the deepest forests, it is difficult to come by a sample of quality.

Eye of Newt
Taken from unfortunate amphibians, this reagent is pickled in a strong brine solution and often used for spells involving sight or knowledge. 
 

Executioner's Cap
Great care must be taken when preparing this mushroom, for it is highly poisonous and often thought to give the user an altered state of consciousness. By boiling the caps in tea or crushing the entire fungus, the deadly fungus transforms into a useful reagent to aid spells designed to damage another individual. Death surrounds this mushroom, the Executioner's Hood as the old necromancers called it was most likely used for illusion, death poison, and divination spells. 


Fertile Dirt
The rich, mineral laden soil is often found in bogs or marshlands and is used in many Necromancy spells. 

 

Garlic  

Few kitchens in Britannia are without these humble alliums. Legends of its protective powers extend back through the mists of time, and in modern magical practice it is used in spells which protect the caster or a target and ward off or dispel a danger or evil. For purposes of magic, the bulb of the plant is washed, peeled and ground into a paste.

 

Ginseng
As a magical reagent, ginseng focuses the powers of healing and enhancement. However, its bitterness belies its restorative nature. Before it can be used in magic ritual, the root of the plant should be boiled in the freshest water, cooled and brought back to a boil in fresh water no less than forty times. With the last boiling, it is transformed into heavy, strong-smelling syrup.

Grave Dust
Found in ancient crypts and graveyards this dust is the last remains of the long dead. It is collected and refined to produce a powerful reagent used by necromancers.

Mandrake Root
The powerful mandrake inhabits the dimmest groves of dankest swamps. Once found, great care must be taken in uprooting it in order to keep the taproot intact, for the taproot is its locus of power. The exposed root is then carefully boiled and dried. Mandrake is used in spells involving strength, power and energy.

Nightshade
The deadly nightshade, another denizen of the swamps, was christened for its strange, waxen flowers, which only bloom at night. It should be carefully handled and prepared, for it is poisonous to the touch. For magical preparations, it is either crushed or brewed into a tea. As a reagent, nightshade focuses the powers of death, damage, poison and illusion. 
 

Obsidian  

This strange substance is fragile yet it endures the heat of the volcano. Duration is its strength and is often used in enchantments or protection spells.

Pig Iron
This raw metal is often forged in smithies for tools and other utilitarian purposes but can be used as a powerful reagent when prepared correctly. Shavings are taken from a bar after being heated white hot and cooled in pure spring water. It is often used in spells of binding or protection.

 

Pumice

This rock, cast highest and farthest from the volcano, retains the etheric impetus built up in the flight.

 

Serpent's Scale
Taken from the legendary giant serpents that inhabit the swamps of jungles of Britannia the scales are dried and ground down into a paste.  As a reagent, serpent scales focuses the powers of damage, poison and illusion.

Spider's Silk
Spider's silk is as common as spiders are, but as fine and light as air. Because of this, at least one ounce of it is required for a simple spell. The spider's silk concentrates the power to summon, conjure and bind.

Sulphurous Ash
This pungent ash, created by violent volcanic disturbances, recalls the fiery and explosive energies of its origin. It is uses in spells which create explosions, fire or light.

Vial of Blood
Blood is the essence of life, and therefore used in spells involving movement, animation, life and death.

Worm's Heart
This reagent, cut from the innards of the ice worm, is useful to a variety of unusual spells, often allowing enchantments involving snow or cold.
