For Immediate Release
Eighteen Snipes sailed this weekend in the Snipe New England Championships on Salem Sound. The regatta, run by the Jubilee Yacht Club as won by Jim Bowers along with his crew Michelle Morphew. In ten races Jim and Michelle bested the fleet with an impressive score of 15 points after the drop. Lee Griffith up from New Jersey ended the event in second place with Pedro Lorson taking home third.
Four generations of Snipe sailors participated in the event. The oldest sailor had not sailed a Snipe in almost 50 years, and the youngest sailor just had his tenth birthday. The class and the boat appeal to a wide range of sailor and the conditions could supported the class motto “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun “.
Saturday the fleet completed 3 races in a range of conditions and wind directions. Sunday the fleet was treated to a westerly breeze that ranged from 8 – 18 knots allowing the race committee to get in seven races.
In addition to sailing hard, Snipe sailors once again showed their generosity. During the regatta a raffle and silent auction was held to support Sail Salem (http://www.sailsalem.org ). Sail Salem is a community sailing program that teaches children how to sail for $1.00 per week session. The funds raised will help Sail Salem complete its summer season.
The event and auction were sponsored by: ArtLog, Inc, Doyle Sailmakers, Foxy Canvas, Harbor Sweets, Harvey Rigging, Henri Lloyd, JibeTech, North Sails Salem, Quantum Sails, RW Rope, Service Canvas, Chris Small Boatworks. Without their generosity this event would not have been possible.
