Opportunity Description: Two to four positions are open each year. The Fall period is from mid-September through the end of December; the Spring period is from early January through the end of April. There is some flexibility in start and end dates. One or two hosts serve during each period.
Duties: Serve as campground host at Hole-in-the-Wall (HITW), a remote 37 site campground located in Mojave National Preserve. Hosts rove the campgrounds and group site daily. Hosts explain rules and regulations, encourage visitors to pay fees, answer questions about the area, assist with trash removal and minor repairs as needed, and perform other duties as skills and interests permit. The HITW host also oversees the Mid Hills Campground, a 26 site area in the scrubby pinyon pines located nine miles away. Since the campgrounds are traditionally not very busy during the week, hosts also assist with staffing the HITW visitor center two days per week, and may also assist with other projects. Other duties might include installation of wilderness boundary fencing, roving patrols of the preserve, additional staffing at the VC desk if desired, presenting interpretive programs with a public speaking/educational background, and/or working with maintenance. A three month commitment is required, with 3 1/2 months preferred to cover the whole season; with 1.6 million acres in the preserve, it takes a while to learn enough about the resource to speak knowledgeably to visitors. Hosts must have their own self-contained RV or trailer; we don't have the facilities to support hosts living in tents or pop-ups. We are also prone to infrequent high winds, exceeding 40 mph for short periods. If you prefer to work only a few hours per day, can't live without full hook-ups, or like living close to town, this position isn't for you. But if you like to stay busy, try new things, and enjoy a wide range of duties, then please read on.
Skills desired: Ability to work well with others, including visitors and co-workers with diverse interests and views. Ability to handle upset and/or irate visitors in calm, professional, and competent manner. Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, adapt readily to frequent change, and maintain a positive attitude. Desire to perform meaningful and sometimes challenging work for personal fulfillment. Ability to live happily in a remote area with few amenities. Public speaking skills, ability to operate computers and cash registers, and ability to operate 4x4 vehicle in remote, sandy, rocky areas also a plus. Safe driving record, valid driver's license, and dependable personal transportation required. Self-contained RV, camper, or trailer also required.
Compensation: Free partial hookup sites (water and sewer) in HITW Campground for two hosts at one time. HITW is off the grid, so no electricity is available. Camground hosts must have their own RV/trailer solar systems or a generator that can power their rig. It is strongly advised that you test a new RV solar system by camping without power for several weeks before arrival, as several hosts' new solar systems did not work properly once they got here due to wiring or other problems. Quiet hours are 7PM to 7AM, so generators may not be used by the host or campers at night. Propane and/or generator fuel costs are reimbursed up to $100 per month at the partial hook-up sites. Free laundry facilities are available at the nearby fire center; there are no other services or amenities at HITW. A government vehicle with emergency radio is provided for official duty use, but volunteers must have reliable personal transportation to get groceries and personal needs during their time off. Volunteers have the opportunity to rove the preserve in the government vehicle twice per month to learn the resource, and are often included in training classes.
VIPs must serve a minimum of 32 hours per week (four days) to qualify for the free RV site. $5 per work day out-of-pocket expenses reimbursement possible for up to four months, funding permitting; the reimbursement may be taxable. Uniform shirts, hat, and coats provided. Incentive award program based on VIP hours donated.
Area: Mojave National Preserve is one of the largest national parks in the contiguous US. Established in 1994, we are a young and growing site. National preserves allow hunting, which primarily occurs in Fall. Our park has the world's largest concentration of Joshua trees, some of the tallest sand dunes in North America, wonderful night sky and natural sound opportunities, designated wilderness covering nearly half the preserve, and critical habitat for the threatened desert tortoise.
The HITW area is inside the park, near its center. Considered remote, HITW is located 63 miles one-way from the small town (pop. 4500) of Needles, CA. Basic shopping and medical services are available in Needles. Thirty miles further in Bullhead City, AZ, or Laughlin, NV, major shopping, services, and medical facilities are available.

Opportunity Description:
Volunteer opportunities at Dry Tortugas National Park require living and working in a very remote and wonderfully unique setting. Volunteers must be in good physical condition and capable of working full days in the sun and wind. Volunteer positions require bending and lifting, as well as work in a sometimes harsh subtropical environment approximately 70 nautical miles from medical care.
Because this is a remote location, careful planning is a must. Internet and phone service is limited and is not always reliable due to weather and satellite conditions. Cell phone service is not available. For groceries you do not pack with you, you can place a grocery order once a week from a local grocery store. The nearest medical facilities are in Key West and are only accessible by daily ferry service (weather dependent).
This is a full-time, temporary volunteer position duty stationed on remote Garden Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, approximately 70 nautical miles from Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. Most volunteers enter the VIP program at Dry Tortugas National Park as Garden Key Hosts. The hosts are responsible for the daily operation of the primitive park campground, composting toilets and public changing rooms. Hosts typically work a minimum of 40 hours per week greeting campers, interacting with visitors, operating the park bookstore and assisting park staff with a wide variety of activities such as maintenance, beach cleanup, clerical work or resource monitoring. Volunteers work closely with park staff on a daily basis and function as an integral part of the team.
Special Requirements: The Garden Key Host opportunity is available for two people and requires sharing a very small 150-square-foot quarters unit with bunk beds, typically described as “one step up from primitive camping.” The unit is equipped with basic cookware and a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, countertop convection oven, electric skillet and gas grill. There is no stove. Most volunteer duties at Garden Key must be performed daily, so volunteers do not have scheduled days off each week.

Opportunity Description: Ocracoke Campground and Visitor Center
Campground Duties: The National Park Service Ocracoke Campground is on the oceanfront three miles north of Ocracoke Village. Duties include welcoming campers, advising campers of activities occurring in the park, performing routine maintenance checks within campground and informing park rangers if repair/maintenance is needed, and checking daily for fee and rule compliance. The campground tucked behind a row of dunes, beyond which lies the wide, unspoiled Ocracoke beach and Atlantic Ocean. The campground is suitable for tents and RVs and offers parking at each site, running water, flush toilets, cold showers, a dump station and charcoal grills. There are very few trees here and, therefore, no shade.
Visitor Center and Lighthouse Duties: The National Park Service Visitor Center and the Ocracoke Lighthouse are located within Ocracoke Village. Duties include staffing the information desk and lighthouse, and answering questions about the Seashore’s natural resources and history, and the Ocracoke community.
Other Duties that may be assigned: Assisting with feeding horses and providing swimming safety information to park visitors on the beach.
Physical Requirements: All volunteers must be physically fit.
Setting: Ocracoke Island is very isolated. Vehicle ferries (40-minute trip one-way) are the only transportation on or off of the Island. Small convenience stores, gift shops and restaurants offer all basic amenities.
Weather: Summers can be hot, humid, and buggy (mosquitoes). Winters are generally mild with occasional windy and cold nor'easter storms.
Transportation: Personal transportation (motorized vehicle) is required as it is several miles from the campground to local stores. There is no public transportation on, or to, the Outer Banks.
Medical Facilities: The local health clinic is staffed by a physician and physician’s assistant. All major medical care is several hours away.
Housing: Volunteer RV hook-ups at the campground may be available, which include electric and water, sewer in exchange for commitment of 30 hrs per week for 6 weeks minimum. Attitude is perhaps the most important qualification for being a good
campground host. Other qualifications include an interest in the outdoors
and a like of people, since visitors will be coming to you for advice on
places to go, where to find services, and with problems that might arise in

pleasure of campground users, but also enjoyment of being a host.
