We're welcoming Ferran Cabrer i Vilagut, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain to this discussion and would like to have your opinions on the first headlines here but commenting on everything in this document. And all the other new members that have been invited. All the new members can give insights to all the points. Participants have to rearrange the topics. We can also build links to new pages. But I think this one is not too long yet. Bookmarks can be used to make it easier to move within the document.

Mobile and Web 2.0 |
There was a time, in the distant past, when technology mainly took the form of simple tools, each used for a particular purpose. But technology gets more complicated as it advances. The simple tools become more elaborate, and they begin to merge into ever more complex systems. Today, a lot of the products that companies produce are components of much larger systems, and the success of those products can hinge as much on the other components of the systems as on their own particular qualities. Making sense of the systems and, in particular, how they're likely to evolve can give a company a big advantage over less insightful competitors. But making sense of technological systems is hard.
The IST 2006 Conference Programme looks at one of the central questions facing European competitiveness today from two different angles. IST 2006 is being held as the Commission launches FP7, its Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development (see the EU's IST research programmes), so one of the main themes of the event will be FP7's ICT objectives and procedures.
The European Union puts considerable emphasis on the need to invest more in research. By increasing our knowledge base, Europe will be more able to address its challenges for the future such as climate change, energy security or the ageing population. Increased emphasis on industrial research and innovation will lead to new products and services that will boost Europe’s international competitiveness.
The EU has responded to the increased need for coordinated and focussed research with the Seventh Research Framework Programme, due to be voted by the European Parliament on 30 November, for final adoption by the Council of Ministers on 5 December. The European Commission is making available information to help guide the press through this comprehensive programme, the biggest yet at European level.
In today's EU, however, ICT research does not take place in isolation. Reflecting the central importance ICTs play in stimulating innovation and competitiveness in all areas of industry, the conference programme will also contribute to the creation of a virtuous cycle between ICT research innovation and socio-economic benefits.
This is the Kurt and Helge initiated" Innovation Society" strategy paper, an online collaboration effort, a work in progress, we're updating the content on a continuous basis. This is an open document and we will ask for more collaborators to participate when we start to get some structure to our approach. 29 November 2006: "This looks like a very functional platform. We're updating the content on a continuous basis and there is a feeling that this is really going to add some value to collaboration," writes Helge Keitel.
My vision Personal EU is a "new organization level of the European Union"
FON, the largest WiFi community in the world, is powered by the belief that the Internet should be everywhere there are people. Building a network from the ground up, FON members willingly share their wireless access at home. In return, they enjoy free WiFi and VOIP wherever they find another member's access point. In this example, entrepreneur Ejovi Nuwere explains the energy behind the FON movement for "everyone, everywhere" Internet access, driven by the explosion of ubiquitous bandwidth and WiFi-enabled devices.

CONSEN : With its strengths in communication equipment, devices, networks and eServices, Europe is well placed in the world-wide race to define and develop the network and service infrastructures of the future. These will generate new innovative products, business models and economic opportunities with new integrated applications, whilst reducing operational expenditures.
The challenge is to deliver the next generation of ubiquitous and converged network and service infrastructures for communication, computing and media. This entails overcoming the scalability, flexibility, dependability and security bottlenecks, as today’s network and service architectures are primarily static and able to support only a limited number of devices, service features and limited confidence.
Such new infrastructures will permit the emergence of a large variety of business models using dynamic and seamless end-to-end composability of resources across a multiplicity of devices, networks, providers and service domains.
This year's edition of the most important European event in the field of Information Society Technologies coincides with the launch of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development. What's Next?
IST 2006 included a high-level conference conference, an Exhibition of cutting edge research results from across Europe and a programme of networking sessions and workshops, with the exhibition and networking programmes defined by participants via this website.
The Conference Programme opened with a first day devoted to high-level policy discussions on what governments and public policy can do to help ICT contribute to an innovative Europe, with Days Two and Three are devoted to the Seventh Framework Programme and other topics surrounding European research and innovation. The Exhibition and Networking Programmes, meanwhile, were defined following proposals by companies, research institutions and other organisations from across Europe via this website.
The transformation of Web 2.0 features into Mobile phones is going to be a mega-size opportunity. Understanding the collaboration culture is important and community building knowledge has great value.
The big deal is going to be, how to create compelling content that leads to new consumer experiences. The mobilization of business applications with the office in your pocket and mobile educational applications are important development areas as well.
"During 2006, a National Knowledge Society Strategy for 2007-2015 has been drafted as part of the implementation of Finnish Government's Information Society Programme. The Strategy outlines a national vision and strategic intent concerning the kind of information society we want in Finland. In addition to the current state of the Finnish information society, the strategy describes changes in the national and international operating environment. The Strategy includes a concrete implementation programme extending to the next Governments term of office and several proposals for measures, including possible responsible parties. The Strategy has been drafted to support the emergence of a Finland phenomenon, in other words, the transformation of Finland into an internationally attractive, human-centric and competitive knowledge and service society. Development of skills and creativity, bold renewal of structures and operating models, and efficient utilisation of technology will make this possible, even under conditions of increasing global competition."
On a more practical level:
Digital learning environments can benefit from the wide experience of modern computer games by providing holistic learning experience – since pure information does not become knowledge until it is imparted within a context and can therewith be experienced. However, the mystery of these games is closely related to learning: it is essential to meet a challenge and a task, to solve problems, to improve and of course to be awarded. One plays a game in order to win. This is precisely how the human brain can be motivated to learn: We want to understand ourselves, explore and understand the world around us and raise the challenge – if we succeed, we obtain comprehension and self-confidence. And we want to discover and know even more.
(27 November 2006) IEE Proceedings Communications invites contributions on the above subject, which is part of an ongoing series of special issues in communications technology and innovation. Recently, telemedicine and e-health activities have seen a large number of successful applications in health care delivery through different communication technologies.

"Think tank"
What's the description of this yellow area? I think this represents a valuable documentation about the various stages we are facing while we are working with the document. It's about the procedures and questions arising while we are working on this document. It's not essential content in a final puplished document but it has a value for the participants. This can be compared with film / movie making. There are so many other things happening during a film shooting: this is a documentation of the creative process, what kind of obstacles we are facing in relation to the docs platform we are using, etc.
I try to get this table located here. And to get it aligned to right and to get text on the left side. How should I do that? We had it once, but then we lost the sidebar. |
Who are we the initiators 29 Nov 2006?
We started this effort early in the morning of 29 Nov 2006Hello Kurt, let's get started, this is our Innovation Society strategy paper. We could also write a short history of our joint collaboration. Do you have any documents telling about when we had the first meeting in Otaniemi (Dipoli)? Another point is that we were separately working with Apple Computer Finland Oy in the early 80's. Irja and myself have been Apple users from 1981 until 1997 when we for some reasons decide to go over to PCs. We did use the Next computers in France in the early 90's.

I think it's better to write in clear text if we have numerous collaborations. I understand you are thinking about a document change approval system. We could use the traffic light language: This is a very good point but I think this one should be removed. <BLINK>Then green and red mean + and - should not be used for anything else.</BLINK> The strike through text is a good way to suggest removing, but I have not found it here.
