Vista Notes:
The following are some considerations when using the Microsoft Vista Operating System with SketchUp and LayOut.
-
Network Licenses - When authorizing using a network license, you have to run SketchUp as an administrator. This means that you need to right click on the icon and choose “Run as administrator”. You need to do this even though you may be logged on as an administrator. If you do not, you will get an error "Unable to copy license". Un-authorizing a network license requires that you "Run as administrator" also.
-
Uninstalling - If you uninstall on a Vista machine, there may be files left in a couple of locations. To remove them, you will need to manually delete the Google SketchUp 6 folder in your install directory (typically at C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6) and then delete the files in [computer name]\AppData\Virtual Store\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6. You may also see shortcuts left on your desktop and, when you try to delete them, get an error message indicating that they cannot be deleted. Reinstalling, deleting the shortcuts, and then uninstalling gets rid of them.
-
Video cards - some video cards do not have drivers that are Vista compliant and that support OpenGL to the extent that we need it to. If your card does not have Vista compliant drivers, you may not be able to use Hardware Acceleration "Preferences" > "OpenGL" > "Hardware Acceleration," or you may see screen artifacts or highlighting problems when using Fast Feedback, "Preferences" > "OpenGL" > "Use Fast Feedback."
-
Some Toolbar icons are displayed incorrectly with Vista’s Classic theme.
-
Turning Fast Feedback on or off may make cause the main SketchUp window to turn white.
-
On Vista Ultimate x64 with Intel Graphics 950G, with Hardware Acceleration on, Send to LayOut may cause SU to hang. The OS may crash when opening Task Manager. With the same setup, LO can be launched on its own and the model can be inserted from within LayOut. Turning off Hardware Acceleration solves this problem.
-
If you have installed SketchUp 6 on XP and then upgrade to Vista, your shortcuts will not survive the change. You should export the shortcuts prior to the upgrade. Your license information will be maintained, however.
-
SketchUp on a Core 2 Duo processor with a nVidia GeForce series 7 card will hang if started with the Vista provided driver. The latest driver from nVidia fixes the problem.
Other Known Issues:
-
The uninstall process for previous releases will delete any user-created or user-modified files stored in LayOut's Default Templates or Default Scrapbooks folders. If you want to keep these files when uninstalling a previous version, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Google\Google SketchUp6 directory, and move the appropriate scrapbook and template files to a different folder. You can move them back to their original directory after you have completed the uninstall process.
-
When you upgrade to the latest release, you will lose any changes that you've made with LayOut's Customize Toolbar function (new toolbars, customized icons, etc). You will also lose any customizations you may have made to the Tray system (the Windows on the right side of the screen). Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this.
-
If "Place Model" to Google Earth doesn't work, it's possible that upgrading to the latest version of Google Earth has disassociated the .kmz file-type from Google Earth. It's not immediately obvious that the link is broken because an exported .kmz may have the Google Earth icon, and would open in Google Earth, but the file is no longer hard wired to open in Google Earth. Thus Place Model from SketchUp would not work. Here's how to fix the problem:
- Right-click on a .kmz file somewhere on your system, and select "Properties."
- Next to "Open With:" click the "Change..." button (in the General tab).
- Now in the Open With dialog, click the "Browse..." button.
- Navigate to Google Earth in the Programs directory.
- Select googleearth.exe, and click the "Open" button.
- Back in the Open With dialog, you should see Google Earth under the "Recommended Programs."
- Click "OK."
- Now in the .kmz Properties dialog, click "Apply", and then "OK" buttons.
-
Windows Bonus Packs do not have an associated uninstall. Go to
-
C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Components and delete any components you do not want.
-
Premiere Elements 3.0 and Chief Architect also use the .layout extension. If Premiere Elements 3.0 is installed after SketchUp Pro/Layout, for example, then you will find the icon and file association has changed from Google Layout to Premiere Elements 3.0. This will cause Adobe Premiere to launch when attempting to use SketchUp's "Send to LayOut" function. You can re-associate the .layout file extension to Google Layout, if you wish.
-
There is currently a bug in the SketchUp 5 installer where, if you uninstall SketchUp 5 after installing SketchUp 6, you can lose the ability to view the thumbnails of SketchUp models in the Windows Explorer. To work around this bug, please reinstall SketchUp 6 in repair mode.
-
64 bit machines will not show thumbnails in Microsoft Explorer for either SketchUp nor LayOut files. This is due to a Microsoft bug that is described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895561 The workaround is to use the 32-bit version of Windows Explorer. To do that, follow these steps:
-
Click Start, click Run, type the following in the Open box, and then click OK:
-
Drive_Letter:\windows\syswow64\explorer.exe /separate
-
Note: the placeholder Drive Letter represents the drive where the x64-based version of Windows is installed.
-
The export to FBX currently fails to produce a file when exporting to a folder names with certain non-English characters. The work around to this issue is to rename the folder and export again.
Google SketchUp issues fixed in Maintenance Release 3:
-
Previously, models with materials containing a “.” within the material name were not showing up when placed into Google Earth. This issue has been fixed.
-
When launching multiple sessions of SketchUp quickly, it was previously possible for SketchUp to crash. This crash has been fixed.
-
When printing with the large format print quality, previously SketchUp could crash. This issue has been fixed.
-
When interrupting the insertion of components by clicking on camera tools, it was possible for SU to crash. This crash has been fixed.
-
When exporting to animations at certain resolutions, SketchUp could previously crash. This crash has been fixed.
-
When hiding a line in the middle of dimensioning it, SketchUp previously crashed. This crash has been fixed.
-
When undoing the reload of a component, SketchUp could crash if other instances of the component existed in the model. This crash has been fixed.
-
Previously, if you changed a component name, pressed Escape and dragged a component into the model, SketchUp could crash. This crash has been fixed.
-
When importing some DWGs, elements of the imported DWG could come in rotated out of the correct plane. This issue has been fixed.
-
After importing a DWG containing scenes, the scene tabs previously could be blank even though the Scene manager contained the correct scene names. Scene tabs should now all have names after importing a DWG.
-
Previously, when saving files or reading files from CDs, it was possible to see the message “Parameter is incorrect” or “Failed to Save”. Files should now be saved or opened without seeing these errors.
Ruby changes:
-
The georeferenced attribute was previously assigned to the wrong object. It is now correctly assigned to the model.
-
The Ruby API observer class Sketchup::ModelObserver previously did not respond to model save actions. It does now.
-
If the import Summary Results dialog was not shown, the DWG import status was not set to “successful” meaning that DWG files could not be imported via Ruby. This has been fixed.
-
The save_thumbnail command previously didn't work if a component didn't already have a thumbnail attached to it. This has been fixed.
-
Previously, notifications were not firing after 100 operations. This issue has been fixed.
-
Previously groups and other geometry were not being copied correctly. This issue has been fixed.
LayOut issues fixed in Google SketchUp Pro 6 Maintenance Release 3:
-
If an inserted file was grouped with other entities, it could be improperly purged from the file references dialog. This would also cause a mismatch between what was selected in the references dialog and what was selected in the document. This is now fixed.
-
A crash could occur when making large changes to a document’s paper size. This has been fixed.
-
If using a paper size larger than 11x17in, LayOut would crash when zooming during a text edit. This issue has been fixed.
-
If a file's thumbnail image was corrupt, LayOut would crash when trying to open the .layout file. This crash no longer occurs.
-
Previously, LayOut would crash if a document was closed when the Document Setup > Grid panel was open. This crash has been fixed.
-
On some Windows machines, LayOut could crash when trying to start. Some instances of this crash have been fixed.
-
In the prior release, some scrapbooks in the scrapbook folder would not show up in the Scrapbooks window. This has been fixed.
-
In the Document Setup dialog, entering a space between a number and its unit (mm, m, cm, or pt) would convert the value to inches. For instance, if “3 cm” was entered in the Paper Width field, it would be converted to 7.62cm (which is the equivalent of 3 inches.) This issue has been fixed.
-
Entities with sharp corners left behind artifacts when moved. This has been fixed.
-
In previous releases, LayOut could take a long time to launch from SketchUp’s “Send to LayOut” menu. This has been improved.
-
There was a problem where the uninstall process would delete user-modified files in All Users\Application Data. This included user-modified scrapbooks and templates. The uninstall for this release now asks the user if any scrapbook or template files should be deleted.
Text Changes:
-
Some Unicode characters (such as ş ţ and ñ) were displayed incorrectly when text was rendered on screen, even though they looked correct when the text was edited. This has been fixed.
-
Copying and pasting text from another application could sometimes cause a crash. Several instances of this crash have been fixed.
-
When editing text, clicking outside of the text box would sometimes not exit the edit. This has been fixed.
-
In previous releases, the spacing between characters would change as the document was zoomed in and out. This has been fixed.
-
Right-aligned text is no longer clipped by its text box at the right edge.
-
Previously, the Gill Sans MT font was rendered as a different font on screen. This has been corrected.
-
In the prior release, text with long words would wrap when it was being edited, but not when it was rendered. This has been fixed.
-
Changing the font size by using the Text/bigger and Text/smaller functions did not always work as expected. This has been fixed.
-
Starting a text box by double-clicking with the text tool would cause the text to disappear after it was edited. This issue has been fixed.
-
If a text box was copied by using the select tool's ctrl-key modifier, the attributes of the original text box could not be changed by single-clicking on the text box. This has been fixed.
-
Similarly, if a text box was copied by duplicating a page, the attributes of the copy could not be changed by single-clicking on the text box. This has been fixed as well.
-
In the previous release, text boxes were selected after exiting a text edit. Pressing escape would not get rid of the selection. This behavior has been changed so that text boxes are no longer selected after exiting text edits.
PDF Export Changes:
-
Text containing Unicode characters (such as ş ţ and ñ) now exports correctly.
-
Some fonts were compressed or stretched when exported to PDF. This behavior has been improved so that the exported PDF more closely matches the LayOut document.
-
PDF exports would fail if a LayOut document contained any lines with a line width < 0 pt. This has been fixed. Line widths equal to or less than 0 are now converted to .1 pt when exporting to PDF.
-
In previous releases, a PDF exported from LayOut would show an error message when opened in a PDF reader. This error does not occur with documents exported from this release.
-
Bulleted text now exports to PDF with the same format that LayOut displays on screen.
Google SketchUp issues fixed Maintenance Release 2:
-
In SketchUp 5, the number of component instances was shown in Entity Info. This was removed in SketchUp 6. Users have requested that it be put back, and we have done that, albeit, with a slightly different implementation.
-
Previously, printing to PDF could cause banding and the disappearance of edges. This issue should no longer occur.
-
When importing a 3ds file with vertices out of range, SketchUp previously could crash. This crash has been fixed and a message has been added indicating the vertices are out of an acceptable range.
-
Previously, exporting to FBX could result in many more meshes in SketchUp 6 than in SketchUp 5. This has been fixed.
-
When importing a DWG file with extremely large coordinates, SketchUp previously would appear to import nothing. If the user then selected all geometry and copied/pasted it, SketchUp could crash. This crash has been addressed.
-
When exporting to image formats with high resolutions, the export could fail with a "failed to save file" error. This has been fixed.
-
Previously, when canceling the import of a DWG, SketchUp could hang. This issue has been fixed. Note: If the DWG import is big and one waits a long time before canceling, it may take a long time for the cancel to complete.
-
Previously, SketchUp would crash when exporting 3ds files to a folder that no longer exists. This crash has been fixed.
-
Previously, edge colors other than black were always printed in black. Edge colors should now print in their actual color.
-
A memory leak that could occur when playing animations with shadows has been fixed.
-
An uninstall of SketchUp previously left a few items in the Windows registry. No registry items should now be left after an uninstall.
-
The Support link in the About SketchUp dialog on the PC did not work. This has been fixed.
-
When copy/rotating an entity painted with certain transparent materials, the entity temporarily disappeared while it was being rotated. This issue has been fixed.
-
DWG export and import could fail if Unicode characters existed in the folder name to which or from which the file was being exported/imported. The same issue could also occur with the 3ds and DEM importers. This issue has been fixed.
-
When installing SketchUp to a directory with Unicode characters, SketchUp previously could issue Ruby errors when launching it and the Ruby extensions (e.g. Sandbox) would fail to work. This issue has been addressed.
-
Minimizing and maximizing the Outliner previously caused all open sub-groups/components to collapse. This issue no longer occurs on the PC.
-
The Google SketchUp free product previously did not have options available for the 2d exports on the PC. Options are now available for both the free and Pro products.
-
Entities painted with certain *.png textures previously would not cast a shadow. Shadows should now be cast from all entities.
-
In certain cases, exporting to 2d formats - images and Epix - could result in the disappearance of edges. This issue should no longer occur.
-
Previously, an exported Epix image was slightly different than other images exported with the same options. Epix images should now match other image formats.
-
The ability to purge unused components, materials, layers and styles when uploading models to the 3d Warehouse has now been added.
-
Under certain circumstances, when the Materials browser was open to an in model view, the browser would refresh while drawing in the model, slowing down SketchUp. The browser should now only refresh when it is appropriate to do so.
-
In certain cases, the back side of a texture could show up in hidden line mode. This issue has been fixed.
-
Previously, when placing models into Google Earth, SketchUp could take longer than it did in SketchUp 5. Placing models should now be faster.
-
The 3d Warehouse now allows for the creator of an uploaded model to upload a revised copy of it, replacing the existing copy. Previously two models would be created.
-
Previously, a crash could occur when scaling the outer edge of a circle using the Ruby observer class. This crash should no longer occur.
-
Previously when printing to PDF with a model that used a sketchy edge style some geometry would not be displayed. This issue has been fixed.
-
When a component bonus pack is installed, that installer reorganizes the component directory. In prior SketchUp Pro releases, an upgrade would install the default components again. This no longer occurs.
-
A crash could occur upon startup if either the licensing data or the web update service data became corrupt. This has been fixed.
-
The SketchUp installer asks if the Google Toolbar should be installed. In the prior release, the toolbar was installed if the Google Search Engine was selected, even if the Toolbar was not requested. This has been fixed.
LayOut issues fixed in Maintenance Release 2:
-
With certain network licenses, it was possible that SketchUp would launch successfully but LayOut would give a license error. This should be fixed.
-
Previously, there was a crash when resizing default tray that is set to auto hide. That no longer happens.
-
Previously, there was a crash on saving as Scrapbook or Template with some non-alphanumeric characters. This has been fixed.
-
Previously, an insert of certain corrupt models could cause a crash. This has been fixed.
-
Sometimes a copy/paste from the clipboard could cause a crash. Several instances of this error have been fixed.
-
The PDF Export now allows the selection of a page range.
-
Default folder location for templates and scrapbooks was not finding Application Data folder for All Users like it is for local user. This only occurs in non-English Operating Systems.
-
LayOut would BugSplat upon launch on some users' machines. Several causes of this has been fixed.
-
Option-Drag (Mac) / Control-Drag (Windows) copying of grouped entities crashed LayOut. This no longer happens.
-
Undoing a copy+drag of pivot crashes LayOut.
-
An “update” option has been added in the right click menu for SketchUp models. This will allow a user to update an out-of-date model.
-
Several causes of Memory Leaks have been corrected.
-
Some crashes associated with loading or displaying the following fonts have been fixed:
-
Arial - Regular (Crashes on launch), Arial Unicode MS – Regular, Century Gothic – Bold, Century Gothic - Bold, Italic, Lucinda Sans – Regular, Microsoft Sans Serif – Regular, Symbol - Regular (Crashes on launch), Tahoma – Regular, Verdana - Regular
- A crash associated with saving the Scrapbook has been fixed.
- Editing an inserted SketchUp model should not cause the rest of the document to fade.
- Sharing a document with a PDF that was created on a Mac may have caused a PC version of LayOut to crash. This has been fixed.
- Previously, a Scrapbook or Template containing non-alphanumeric characters would not save on a Mac. This has been fixed.
- Page Setup would crash when no printers had been administered. This has been fixed.
- Several issues with non-English paths and data entry had been reported and have been fixed. We are continuing to work on these.
Other Changes:
- The SketchUp User Guide is now on-line. You will not be able to directly access the Online User Guide unless you are connected to the Internet. Please note that there are downloadable PDF files containing the User Guide contents. These can be located at the following links:
- On an upgrade, Shortcuts will be picked up from SketchUp 5. However, some of the shortcuts may collide with existing SketchUp 6 defaults and the defaults will override. You can still change these by going to "Windows" > "Preferences" > "Shortcuts."

Vista Notes
The following are some considerations when using the Microsoft Vista Operating System with SketchUp and LayOut.
- Network Licenses - When authorizing using a network license, you have to run SketchUp as an administrator. This means that you need to right click on the icon and choose “run as administrator”. You need to do this even though you may be logged on as an administrator. If you do not, you will get an error “unable to copy license”. Unauthorizing a network license requires that you “run as administrator” also.
- Uninstalling - If you uninstall on a Vista machine, there may be files left in a couple of locations.
- Video Cards – There are a number of issues with Hardware Acceleration, Fast Feedback, and some of the video cards we have tested. Note that "Hardware Acceleration" and "Fast Feedback" are accessible via "Window" > "Preferences" > "OpenGL."
Please note a list of cards with known display issues is below. The types of issues we have seen include screen artifacts, selection highlighting anomalies, and not seeing rubber band lines while drawing. SketchUp requires OpenGL compliant cards and drivers. The Microsoft Vista supplied drivers may not support OpenGL to the extent needed for SketchUp to work properly. If you are having problems, visit the card manufacturer’s site and install their latest Vista driver.
Some of these drivers are not supporting OpenGL to the extent needed, at this time. Turning off Hardware Acceleration and/or Fast Feedback may solve the problem. Some cards, even with the manufacturer’s drivers, may not allow you to turn Hardware Acceleration on at all!
Most ATI Radeon cards we have tested have left screen artifacts and cursor trails with large models and Fast Feedback activated. It is important to have the latest drivers for these cards as AMD is working on this issue and new updates may contain fixes. ATI FireGL cards currently have no ATI supplied Vista drivers and the Microsoft drivers will not support Hardware Acceleration. ATI drivers for these cards should be available shortly.
