New Find(s?)

Site finders are lucky people! Morris mentioned a list of this happy finders (36!) in his article 'The Prehistoric Rock Art of Great Britain: A Survey of All Sites bearing Motifs more Complex than Simple Cup-marks'
(Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, nr 55, 1989, pp.45-88).

It was in August 1998, when I was at Weetwood Moor near Wooler. I was happy to find a carving on a boulder near Coldmartin's Lough, about hundred meters South of the well-known site -with the same name- near the communication mast. By that time I didn't know that it was a new find because this area was thoroughly explored over the years by many experts. I photographed the boulder and that was it!

It was not untill April 2001 that I asked Mr Stan Beckensall the following question:
"In grid: NU 0095 2785, 180 yards East of the communication tower, lies a boulder with a clear cup mark and a faint motif what looks like a cup with two intermittent rings. Photo 1 shows the details of the motif. Photo 2 was taken over the boulder to the North with the Coldmartin Loughs carvings visible in the background. What is your opinion on this boulder? Natural weathering or man-made rock-art?"

Mr Beckensall replied: "Great! This boulder at Coldmartin is a new one for me. It's amazing how one can miss something..... I have included it in my Archive text and attributed its discovery to you. It definitely is cup and ring marked.."
