How do these quotes from Frankenstein exemplify Romanticism?
Chapt. 9:
Victor is visiting
Mont Blanc:
"A tingling long-lost sense of pleasure often came across me during this journey. some turn in the road, some new object suddenly perceived and recognized, reminded me of days gone by, and were associated with the light-hearted gaiety of boyhood. The very winds whispered in soothing accents, and
maternal Nature bade me weep no more. Than again the kindly influence ceased to act---I found myself
fettered again to grief and
indulging in all the misery of reflection."
Eva E.: Nature is reviving his spirits.
Derrick D.: It's mostly nature, like Eva says, but I also think nature is returning him to the innocence of his childhood. Didn't Wordsworth believe in the spirit of the child?
Eva: Yes, childhood is definitely a factor. There is also the idea of nurturing, because of the word "maternal".
Derrick: Mother Nature. Nature's always a mother--haha. What's fettered? And, btw, gaiety doesn't mean, like, gay, does it?
Eva: Sometimes gay is just gay (happy) ;)
Derrick: gotcha. But what's fettered? Like being in chains?
Eva: yep
Mrs. Gratton: good so far. What happens when he starts to analyze his thoughts, and why is that important?Elizabeth is discussing Justine's guilt or innocence of murder with Victor:
"But she was innocent. I know, I
feel, she was innocent: you are of the same opinion, and that confirms me."
Derrick: I don't get this one at all. Maybe jsut because she is too nice to be guilty?
Eva: Yeah, I'm not sure either, but what your saying makes sense.
Derrick: So what do we say?
Eva: I think the word feel points to the importance of feelings. So maybe its wgat Elizabeth thinks.
Derrick: What? Oh, ok. but everyone else feels she is guilty.
Eva: Except Victor.
Mrs. Gratton: You're on the right track with Elizabeth's inner feelings. Why are they important?Chapt. 10The monster is explaining to Victor why he has become so violent and depraved.
"Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous."
Eva: he was treated badly, so now he wants to hurt people. If you treat him with love and kindness, he will be good again.
Derrick: I like it. Let's go with it. Our time's almost up.
Mrs. Gratton: I like it too. Now, what does it say about society as a whole.
