I Couldn't Believe It (the short story)

"Geoff, I can't do this." Kyra says slowly as she turns and picks up her jacket from Geoff's bed.

"What can't you do, baby girl?" Geoff asks as he watches her, lying on his bed.

     "I can't be with you."

     "Why?"

"Because my heart still belongs to another man."

Kyra walked away. Geoff's eyes followed her till she went out the door and around the corner.

'I can't believe it. Can't she realize how much Spike doesn't love her?'

As Kyra walked home that night, she felt lonely and afraid. Nothing was going right with her. Everything was going wrong. When she finally got home that night, she went straight to bed. About 2:30 in the morning, she heard her cell phone ring.

"Hello?" she asks groggy and sleepy.

"Hi, Kyra. How are you?" the voice asked.

"Geoff?" She seemed to be awake all of a sudden.

"Yeah, it's me, Geoff. So how are you doing?"

"I'm fine, Geoff, but I told you not to call me anymore. I told you that I can't be with you. Don't you get that?" she asked, puzzled and bewildered.

"I do get that. That's why I called," Geoff calmly responded back.

"What do you mean?" she questioned.

"I mean that you should meet me outside right now. Don't forget to put on a jacket. It's kind of cold outside," he demanded more than suggested

     "Okay."

She hung up the phone. She didn't know what else to do, so she just put on her black jacket that had white stripes down the sides of the sleeves. She walked outside and saw Geoff standing by his silver Toyota. She walked up to him.

He gave her a hug and told her to get into the car. He went around to open the car door for her. He went back around and got in the driver's seat. He started the car.

"Who does your heart belong to, girl?" he asked as he gave her a innocent peck on the cheek.

"It belongs to Spike. Who else?" she asked puzzled.

"Spike, you say? Okay. Have you done it with him?"

     "Done what?"

     "You know. That."

"Oh! That! No, of course not. He said he wasn't ready, so I agreed to let our relationship go slowly. I mean, he barely wants to make out with me."

"How long have you been together?"

"We've been together for about 6 months. Why?"

"Because I want to show you something." And with that, he started to drive off.

     "Where are we going, Geoff?"

"We're going to Spike's house. Did he invite you over tonight?"

"No, because he said he had something else planned." Kyra gently put her head down, as if she were ashamed of something.

"Okay. I'll show you what 'something else planned' is."

That quieted her till they got to Spike's house. They drove up to his house and Geoff parked the car in front. He turned the car off, but kept the radio on.

"Are we gonna knock?" Kyra asked, kind of puzzled.

"Yeah, but please let me do it. Just stay behind me, okay?"

"Okay. I'll do that for you. But what are you gonna prove to me?"

"I'll prove to you where Spike's heart really lies."

"It lies with me. Where else would it lie?"

"Has he ever said that he loves you?" He gently puts a hand on Kyra's knee.
"Yes, of course. He says it all the time." She pushed his hand off of her knee.

"Does he ever look in your eyes when he says it?"

     "Sometimes, why?"

"I'll show you why I'm so curious." He climbs out of the car with Kyra behind him.

He walks up the door and knocks. He heard nothing so he knocked again. Still nothing, so he rang the doorbell. Finally he heard footsteps.

"I'm coming! Hold your horses!" they could hear a voice from inside say.

A man with brown hair and brown eyes suddenly appears in the doorway as he opens the door. He had a nice body, but was only wearing his boxers. Geoff recognized the man as Spike right away when he started talking because he has a hick accent. "What do you want?" Spike yells more than asks, like he's been drinking or smoking too much. "Oh, hi, Geoff. Would you like to come in?"

"Yes, please. Can you please put some clothes in front of your girlfriend?"

     "My girlfriend?"

"Yeah, me!" Kyra says as she steps out from behind Geoff.

"Oh, hi, Kyra. I didn't see you there. Please come in. I'll go put some clothes on real quick. I'll be right back."

     "Whatever. Take your time."

"Spike dear, who's out there?" they heard a girl's voice say from the back room. All of a sudden a girl with dirty blond hair and bright blue eyes stepped out of the back room. She had a nice body, but you really couldn't see it that well because she had on Spike's shirt. That was all she had on. Kyra recognized the girl as her best friend, Nicki. They've been friends since they were in first grade.

"Hi, Kyra, Geoff. How are you doing?" Nicki asks in the same drunk/stoned way that Spike did.

"I'm doing just fine, bitch. Thanks for sleeping with my boyfriend." Kyra says scarcastly as she goes over to where Nicki is standing.

"I swear. It's, um, not what you think it is." Nicki starts to step back, away from Kyra.

"Sure. I'll believe that when that jackass," she points at Spike, "marches up to me and asks me to marry him. If it's not what it looks like, then you must be in the wrong house and the wrong shirt!"

"Okay! Okay, I admit it. I did sleep with Spike. But it was just tonight. I swear." Nicki holds up her hands as if she were in trial, being a witness.

     "Just tonight?"

"Yeah. It was just tonight. I swear." Nicki backs up even farther from Kyra. She almost runs into the wall.

"Is that what you would have said every other time that he said he had plans?" Kyra continues in the presecution process. She continues walking toward Nicki.

     "Yeah, it would have been."

"So, now you aren't just a back-stabbing best friend slash bitch. You're now lying, back-stabbing best friend slash bitch." Kyra starts to back off and throws her arm around everywhere, nearly missing Nicki.

"Something like that." Nicki tries to act innocent-like, but Kyra can see through all that.

"Well, I want you to meet someone very special to me." Kyra starts to raise her arm.

     "Who?" Nicki asks puzzled.

"Mrs. Hand." Kyra slapped Nicki right across the face. "That's for being everything BUT my best friend. Goodbye, Spike. Goodbye, Nicki. I hope you both burn in Hell. Oh, wait. I forgot. You're both an insult to HELL!!!" She starts to walk away, toward the front door.

Kyra grabbed Geoff's hand. "Come on, Geoff, let's get out of here. I don't like cheating boyfriends or back-stabbing best friends." She gave a really nasty look to Spike and Nicki before leaving. She pulled Geoff to the door.

Geoff followed Kyra out the door. He walked her to his car and opened the door for her, again. She sat down inside of it and he closed the door after her. She just sat there, as if she were about to cry.

He walked around to the other side. He got in and as soon as he sat down, she burst out in tears.

"How could he do that to me?" she cried. "I've been a good girl. I never cheated on him. I wasn't too clingy. I wasn't too distant. I was just right. He never complained about me. He always called to tell me why he would or wouldn't be ablecall. I HATE HIM!!!" This was the first time that tears had actually come out in a long, long time.

Geoff brought her into his chest. She wiped her tears into his gray Marine shirt. He gently stroked his hand through her dark brown hair. He brought her beautiful face up so that she could look into his face. He stared into her green eyes.

"Girl, look at me." He gently nudges her chin, so her eyes are really looking into his. "Now do you know what I mean by his heart not lying with you? It lies with no one but himself. I think that you have finally realized that he is nothing but a selfish jerk. He cares about no one but himself. I mean, he didn't even try to stop you from going; he didn't even try to explain what has happened tonight. Now please, girl, will you come with me tonight?" Geoff asks as he tries to sooth her. Kyra sat up and looked at him, bewildered and puzzled.

"Where are we going?" Kyra says through broken tears as she tries to wipe them away. But unfortunely, the tears wouldn't stop coming for her.

"I'm going to show the night of your life." And with that, he drove off into the midst of the darkness of the night.
