RIDING THE RURAL ROUTE
Over the hills and
around the trail;
Bumping along with the U S mail
The life of a mail
carrier I thought was a breeze;
I knew nothing about when it was 15
degrees.
I knew nothing about the mud and the snow;
But I well remember
the day it was 15 below.
I knew nothing about the rain and the storms;
or
what to do when a mail bundle swarms.
All of this I thought I knew;
But
believe you me I didn't have a clue.
Once I get there, there's no time to
waste;
A lot of mail here to be cased.
To make me feel better everyone
tried;
But I felt nervous, It's a blizzard outside.
I get the mail cased
and all tied out;
Now I am ready to go on the route.
I loaded my jeep and
got on my way;
I whispered"let it be a good day.
I climb over packages and
reach in the back;
To get a catalog out of the mail sack.
For the right
one I began to search;
When my old jeep gave a terrible lurch.
There on
the road with the mail by my side;
I put my head on the wheel and sat there
and cried.
This was just the beginning I can tell you for sure;
Of the day
that's ahead for me to endure.
The roads are very slick but the customers
will wait;
They know it's the weather and I'm running late.
Except for the
lady at her box without warning;
Said"I'll speak to the Postmaster"bout you
first thing in the morning.
The look on her face as she gave me a
glare;
Made me think I'd rather be selling Tupperware.
I hurried to the
next box only to find;
A letter to stamp and one thin dime.
Don't they
know postage is more than that?
And just about then my tire went flat.
On
the road again my spirits sag;
I step on the brake to put down a flag
My
fingers are frozen as the smile on my face;
I dig out the pennies and put the
stamp in place
My body is weary, my toes feel brickle;
For this job this
minute I wouldn't give a nickel.
But in the next box just for my sake;
The
flag was up and a big piece of cake.
And tucked inside I read a note;
Have
a good day as that mail you tote.
The day's almost over the Post Office in
sight;
My headlights are on for it's almost night.
There are many
obstacles and sometimes a barrier
In the day of a rural letter
carrier.
