Program Description & Application 2009

Deadline to Apply:  February 27, 2009

The Lane Evans Home Court Fellowship Program

The Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless (WLCH) is looking to select dedicated and qualified Georgetown Law students to serve as Fellows this spring semester.  These individuals will gain valuable public interest work experience while working with WLCH legal professionals on a special project.  All legal work will count towards the Pro Bono Pledge.  Projects will vary and may include:

·         Researching legal issues and drafting memos and sample pleadings to address current legal issues.

·         Preparing materials for a policy briefing of local officials, using lessons from the past 20 years.

·         Assisting attorneys with intake at various local shelters.

·         Helping community members prepare testimony for City Council policy & budget hearings.

·         Developing presentations to give at local clinics and shelters to inform the homeless of their rights.

About the WLCH

Founded in 1986 by a group of local attorneys including several Georgetown Law graduates, the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless is a non-profit corporation dedicated to providing free legal services to homeless individuals and families in Washington, D.C.  WLCH helps over a thousand individuals each year deal with issues ranging from appealing denials of public benefits to accessing emergency shelter to securing permanent affordable housing.   WLCH also undertakes advocacy on a range of broader issues affecting people who are homeless.  For more information about WLCH, visit their website at www.legalclinic.org.

About Home Court

Started by a group of Georgetown Law students in 1987, Home Court is an annual charity basketball game featuring a team of Congress members battling a team of Georgetown Law faculty.  The charity fundraiser is organized by Georgetown Law students, with all proceeds going to support WLCH.

About Lane Evans

Lane Evans, a Georgetown Law graduate (L’78), served as a Congressman from Illinois from 1983 to 2007.  Evans previously led the “Hill’s Angels” bipartisan roster of Congress members.

Commitment and Important Dates

·         Fellows are expected to work 5 hours per week on-site at WLCH’s offices (12th & U Streets).[1]   Scheduling of office hours will accommodate Fellows’ class schedules.   Fellows will begin working the week of March 16th and will complete the Fellowship by April 17, 2008.

·         Fellows will give an informal mid-term presentation about their projects to an audience of WLCH staff and other Fellows during the first week of April.

·         Fellows are also expected to assist in organizing this year’s Home Court charity basketball game (tentatively scheduled for the evening of April 2nd or 16th).  This involves attending periodic Home Court planning meetings on-campus, and participating in either tabling, recruiting, or publicity for the event.  This is an opportunity for Fellows to network with the greater Georgetown Law community.
