Introduction

"The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time."
-Abraham Lincoln

When Mac OS X first came out, it had a nice clock in the menubar, but it only displayed the time. Every day you needed to click the menubar to show the date. We found ourselves clicking daily in the menubar, until we thought, "enough of that" and decided it was time to make something better.

The first job of iClock is to remedy the omission (in the default Mac OS menubar clock) of not being able to see the date. Most of us want to know the date without clicking in the menubar every day.

Regular Old Mac Menubar Clock
Mac OS menubar clock.
See? No date.

Enhanced with iClock
iClock. See the date? Simple, but sweet.

And you can change the font, color, style and format to whatever you want!
That was just the beginning.

iClock became extremely popular by being the first application simply to place both the time and date in the menubar.

Next, with just a click, iClock offered a menu with many cities and their respective time zones (image right). This was yet another first and is very handy since many of us make calls and travel to other locations around the world and need to know "local time". After that, Mark Fleming (the programmer) added the ability to change the font, formatting, and color of the time and date.

There was such a strong, positive response to this that he continued adding features. He added a drop-down menu of time zones that appeared when you click on the time. He also added an application menu, like in OS 9. Again, the response was huge, and soon iClock had several thousand users. Since then, Mark has continued adding useful features, all centered around time.

This latest version of iClock has been completely rewritten over the past two years. We have named the latest version: iClock Pro. iClock Pro is not just a clock, but a time hub for all kinds of time-related functions. Many people say they cannot get along without iClock. We hope that all the recent development on iClock Pro will make it even more central to helping you be more productive.

Requirements

"As if you could kill time without injuring eternity." Henry Thoreau

iClock Pro requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

Users of Mac OS 10.4 can use the older iClock 3.05

Users of Mac OX 10.3.9 can use this version of iClock

Terminology

Changes from Earlier Versions of iClock

Ye olde iClock first appeared in 1999 (back in the last century) for Mac OS 9. A newer version for OS X was created in 2002. The earlier iClock was a continuously evolving work that developed organically based on our ideas and user requests. iClock Pro has been completely rewritten and incorporates all those requests in a more coherent user interface (UI).

With iClock Pro (circa 2008), Mark has done a masterful job at keeping all the features of the earlier versions and, simultaneously, making the interface much easier and more accessible. Now, everything is located in one place:  the iClock System Preference panel. From there, you can turn iClock Pro on or off. You can also control the preferences for all the items in the various menus, including the time, date and other applications. It's simple! If you have used iClock before, we think you will find it easy to transition to iClock Pro.
Making it this easy was very difficult. I should know! I followed Mark's work every step of the way. So, if you are an old user and enjoy the latest version or if you have a suggestion to improve iClock Pro, please feel free to let Mark know

Version Changes Info.

Previous users of iClock should have received an upgrade letter from us. If not, please contact us for details concerning the upgrade.

Installation

"The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen all at once." - Albert Einstein

New and Old Users: Double-click on the iClock Pro Installer. The installer installs only two files: one system control panel and one library file.

You will be presented with this dialog box. Respond by clicking "Continue".

Next, you will be prompted to confirm installation of the Preferences' panel and iClock's library file. Then click "Install".
Next, you will be prompted to Authenticate as Administrator to install the Preferences' panel and iClock's library. Here you will need to type in your password and then click "OK".

If you are re-installing, this installs the new iClock Library file and upgrades the menu extras. You need to logout to activate new menu extras.

The next dialog box will ask if you want to check for updates automatically. We highly recommend you have it "check automatically" because we are constantly working to improve iClock. We always recommend having the latest version.
Next, it will ask you to logout or restart. You can do this when it is convenient, but not all iClock Pro features will work until a logout or restart is done.

To Uninstall: Open the installer and you will find an "Uninstall" menu item in the file menu. Choose this. The uninstaller will turn off iClock Pro and then remove the control panel and the library file. This is the best way to uninstall iClock Pro.

Usage Preferences/Settings

The clock of life is wound but once,
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.

To lose one's wealth is sad indeed,
To lose one's health is more,
To lose one's soul is such a loss
That no man can restore.

The present only is our own,
So Live, Love, toil with a will --
Place no faith in 'Tomorrow' --
For the clock may then be still.

Menus

There are 3 types of menus in the menubar that iClock Pro creates.

  2. Date Menu - shows the mini-calendar and events/to do lists.

Q&A

"I'm becoming more and more myself with time, I guess that's what grace is, the refinement of
your soul through time." - Jewel

Q: Does iClock Pro work on Mac OS System 10.4 or lower?
A: No, iClock Pro is only for 10.5, 10.6 or higher.
The last version of iClock to work on Mac OS 10.4 was iClock 3.0.5 (click to download).
For Mac OS 10.3.9 use this version of iClock (click to download).
For Mac OS 10.2 use this version of iClock 2.5.3 (click to download).

Right now you can get iClock Pro for $20 till May 30th. The price will rise after that.

Q:
I am having a problem with iClock Pro what do I do?
A: If you have a problem first follow these steps:
    1. Download and install the latest version of iClock Pro.
    2. Use the installer to install the latest version of iClock Pro.
    3. Log out or Restart.
    4. If you still have an issue then in the installer check the box 'reset to defaults' and install again.
If you still have a problem first follow these good ideas for avoiding problems or slow downs on your Mac.
  1. Make sure your software and OS is up to date.
  2. Repair permissions by using the Apple Disk Utility.

Q: How do I enable/disable the network info menu item?
A: In the preferences click on time and then check the 'Show IP menu item and network information in tool tip.' item (see below):
Q: How do I enable Microsoft Entourage Support in iClock Pro?

User Raves (want to rave?)

"I tried iclock because I was annoyed with not being able to see the date in the bar.  When I  went to pay for it, I noticed copypaste and decided to try it because I frequently want to do a little fancier copying.  I probably won't use the more advanced options, but I want the simple things to work well. Thanks Ed."
Dr. Edward Catmull, one of the co-founders of Pixar. He was President and CTO of Pixar and now is President of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.

"With my line of work, I never know what distant corner of the world my job will take me. iClock's simple, intuitive interface never lets me down. With a quick glance at the pull-down menu, I can see what time it is where I am....where I'm going...and where I've been. With another click, I can check the weather at my next destination. Its so much more than a digital timepiece for the Mac."
Kevin Rafferty, visual effects supervisor "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer", "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace", "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" and many other movies.

"It's hard to imagine that so much functionality could be packed into a 'clock'!"
Guy Kawasaki, Author, Blogger, Evangelist, and Entrepreneur.

"iClock saves time! Once again I've snagged an invaluable tool from Script Software. iClock elegantly offers just the right balance of functionality and features. No digging - no bloat; just a wonderfully simple tool to help manage my clock, my time, my Mac."
Rand Miller, Co-creator of Myst and Riven

"Many thanks. Great app!"
David Bogart, Executive VP & COO, Ontario Innovation Trust

"The new iClock Pro is excellent and it is very stable. I also like all those links to various sites. I really love being able to easily glance at the bar and see the day and date plus I find the drop down calendar super useful in that it lists calendar items that are coming up. Excellent!"
Kerry Dawson

"Best time I ever had!!!!"
Charles Henry, PanTech Inc.

"I love iClock. It's not only attractively designed, it's really useful, too. Besides all its time features, I was delighted when I saw that it restored the drop down menu for open applications."
James Henry Rubin, Professor and Chair, Department of Art, State University of New York

"The feature that attracted me to iClock was the location time menu. As you know software sales is world wide because of the Internet. When I need to make a service call overseas I need to know what time it is in that country. I have used other products that require running a program to see the times, or software that clutters the desktop with clocks. iClock is simple, non-obtrusive and FAST. Thank you for a very useful yet simple to use program."
David Parrish

"iClock is AWESOME! You should really try to get Apple to include it with all their machines! I'm glad I found it. Thanks!"

"I couldn't live without iClock now. I love it because it is so simple, but has so many powerful features. I am constantly amazed at what it can do."

"I am a ham radio operator and I just want others to know that iClock 2 offers useful nw features for hams. The new 2.0 version supports handy web links along with many other useful features making it a very nice tool for HAM operators. I use iClock for time conversions, a handy quick calendar for looking up date (launches iCal when you want to enter something), Alarms, Stocks and more. An important note is Mark Fleming the author is interested in other links hams might find useful."
