Doug Muder is an
online columnist for UU World and a member of First Parish in Bedford, Massachusetts. His articles for the print version of
UU World include "
Not My Father's Religion: Unitarian Universalism and the Working Class" and "
Who's Afraid of Freedom and Tolerance?" He has also written for
The Humanist,
Religious Humanism, and
Public Eye. He produces a once-a-week blog
The Weekly Sift, which bills itself as "the political blog for people who don't have time for political blogs." He is working on an introduction-to-UU book for Skinner House Books, tentatively titled
Unitarian Universalism 101.
Doug took a chance on his teen-age dream of being a writer after ten years as a research mathematician for the Mitre Corporation, where he specialized in geometry and information theory. He has a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago.
He has a long-term interest in adult religious education, and has created and led several courses for First Parish in Bedford. His favorite was a collaboration with his wife Deborah Bodeau: "Practical Magick", an introduction to the uses of ritual in everyday life.
Doug and Deborah live in Nashua, New Hampshire. They will celebrate their 25th anniversary in March.
