Course Syllabus
Course Description:
Spanish I is a course where students learn to understand and utilize the Spanish language through reading, writing, listening and speaking in the target language.
Instructional Philosophy:
Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. Students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad; look beyond their customary borders; develop insight into their own language and culture; act with greater awareness of self, of other cultures, and their own relationship to those cultures; gain direct access to additional bodies of knowledge; and participate more fully in the global community and marketplace.
Benchmark Assessments:
1st Quarter: Students will read, write, speak and understand using correct Spanish vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to communicate about: where they are going and how they are going to get there; what they are going to do; what they do; places in a city; foods they like and dislike; information about foods and restaurants, celebrations, people they know.
2nd Quarter: Students will read, write, speak and understand using correct Spanish vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to communicate about: where they live; where and what things are in your house and neighborhood; places of interest, both here and abroad; types of homes; location expressions; things people own; relationships among people; sports and activities; what they know how to do; what they want to do; the weather and seasons; what to do and what to wear; games they play; giving advice.
3rd Quarter: Students will read, write, speak and understand using correct Spanish vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to communicate about: school subjects and schedules; activities in school; making excuses; schools in other countries; places in school; classes and class work; daily routines; getting ready; leaving and receiving phone messages; Latino culture.
4th Quarter: Students will read, write, speak and understand using correct Spanish vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation to communicate about: places to shop and things to buy; store transactions; different kinds of stores and products; where they or someone else went, did, and saw; giving something to someone; qualities of a person, place or thing.
Major Course Goals:
The major course goals of Spanish I are for students to: Communicate in the Spanish language; Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures; Develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
Major Course Projects and Instructional Activities:
Daily participation
In-class and home study of vocabulary and grammar.
Current upkeep of Spanish Notebook
Presentations and stand-up dialogues – both with classmates and individual.
Course Assessment Plan:
Daily participation points.
Regularly scheduled quizzes.
Pop quizzes.
Chapter tests.
Other assigned homework.
Course Expectations:
Students are expected to come to class each day prepared to participate.
80% of learning a foreign language consists of vocabulary memorization, therefore students must memorize vocabulary in the target language.
Students are expected to treat others with respect, put-forth their best effort and do what is needed in order to acquire the knowledge offered to them and to help others do the same.
Supplies and Materials Needed:
1. Spanish-English dictionary. I would prefer Webster's.
2. 3 ring binder (no wider than 2”) with 5 dividers.
3. Writing utensils. Preferably pencils. Black or blue pens are acceptable.
