Student Expectations

How Will I Meet This Expectation?

How Did I Meet This Expectation?

Demonstrate ability to evaluate sources of biology information on the internet

  • I will only use websites that follow the rules listed here.
  • I will include in my post an explanation as to why my sources are credible.
  • I will help my classmates evaluate web sources by contributing to the class credible sources wiki page.

Demonstrate an ability to read and understand current biology news

  • I will research a biology topic I am interested in that has been discussed in recent science news media.
  • I will research all parts of the article and will collect information from other sources about the parts that I do not immediately understand.
  • I read the Science Daily article about the color of the sky found here.
  • I did not understand the part of the article about wavelengths so I conducted further research and found help on the NASA website here.
  • I was able to explain the article to my parents without having to look at the article.
  • I was able to write a blog post about the topic using my own words.

Demonstrate proper use of online resources

  • I will include correctly placed hyperlinks to all of my sources in my post.
  • I will include a relevant creative commons or public domain image and properly attribute that image in order to catch the attention of my readers.
  • All of my sources where hyperlinked in my post at the location where the information was given.
  • I included in my post a relevant creative commons picture that I found on Flickr and a relevant public domain picture I found on Wikipedia.

Publish work that is available for peer-review in an appropriate format.

  • Prior to submitting my blog post to Ms. Baker I will post it on my wiki page and have at least one student check that it is complete.
  • I will publish my work on the class blog.
  • I will also mention my post on other social networking sites that I currently use in order to direct readers to my post.
  • I will post a link to my blog in the comment field section of the original news article if possible.
  • I published my post on the blog here after Sam reviewed it on my wiki page.
  • I put a link to my post in my Facebook status.
  • I posted a link to my blog post in the comments section of all my sources.

Discuss published work with a practicing biologist in that particular field

  • I will contact the scientists who conducted the research that is being discussed in the news article and will respectfully request input regarding my post.
  • I will search and find other scientists who are blogging about the same topic and contribute to their post about the topic.  I will also request that they critique my post.
  • While the scientists who conducted the original research did not respond to my email, I forwarded Ms. Baker a copy of the email for her review.
  • I left a comment to a scientist's blog post dealing with my topic and responded to all the responses I received to my comment.
  • Several people from the scientist's blog post left comments to my post and I responded to their comments.

Provide constructive peer-review to classmates

  • I will write constructive comments to several of my classmates' posts that attempt to continue the conversation.
  • I will respond to all comments that are written in response to my comments.
  • I will respond to comments left to my post.
  • I will edit at least one of my classmates blog posts on their wiki page.
  • I provided a constructive comment to the Halo 3 post here.
  • I provided a constructive comment to the post about stem cells here.
  • I provided a constructive comment to the post about eye color here.
  • I responded to my classmates' comments to my post here.
  • I edited Brian's post on his Wiki page as is evident by viewing the history page here.  I told him he needed to change his picture and make it a creative commons picture.  I also told him that his questions at the bottom of his post needed to be science-based and not opinion-based.

Discuss in-class assignments

  • I will comment to several posts that directly relate to in-class topics.
  • I will make my post relevant to in-class topics by connecting it to something that has been discussed in class or will be discussed in class in the future.
  • I continued a conversation about respiration that was started in class by writing a blog post here.
  • I responded to the post about the applesauce lab by writing a comment here.
  • I connected the Deep Sea Fish post to the competitive exclusion principle discussed in class by writing a comment here.

Apply creativity to work

  • I will add a relevant cartoon I created on bitstrips.com to my post.
  • I will make a video that can be posted on the blog about a biology topic.
  • I made this video about semipermeable membranes with my friends and posted it on the blog.
  • I made this bitstrip comic and published it with my post.
