Environmental Trainers Network

TRAINING PROGRAMME 2008/2009

Event: CREATIVE USE OF SOUND IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Date: Thursday 17 July 2008

Tutors: Tony Whitehead, RSPB

Venue: Centre of the Earth

This fascinating event will show you ways in which recorded sounds from our natural environment can be used in innovative and creative ways by young people. It will include techniques that sharpen listening skills, a beginner’s guide to equipment for recording natural sound, how to use freely available computer software to `compose' with recorded sound, presentation techniques – and places to play what you’ve recorded. The event is being run in conjunction with Sonic Arts Network and the Sonic Postcards Project (www.sonicpostcards.org).

This event is aimed at countryside staff wishing to develop new environmental arts projects with young people or teaching staff looking for new directions in environmental education. It assumes no previous knowledge of audio hardware or software.

Participants are required to bring a laptop computer to the event. Please let us know if you are unable to do so.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the event you will have:

  • Learned how to encourage young people to listen and to take pleasure in their sonic environment

  • Learned how to make sound recordings in the environment

  • Learned how to compose with environmental sound

  • Learned how to use computers to create audio tracks from recorded sound

THE TUTOR

Tony Whitehead is a public affairs officer for the RSPB in South West England, and previously worked for six years as warden of the RSPB’s flagship educational reserve at Sandwell Valley, in the heart of Birmingham and the Black Country. He has many years’ experience of working with young people in an environmental context, both through work with schools and extensively through running events and environmental playschemes. Over the past four years Tony has worked with Sonic Arts Network as workshop leader on a number of projects that aim to encourage young people to listen and take pleasure in their sonic environment.

THE VENUE
