In addition: Leads are concise, clearly summarize the story and – most importantly – are appropriate to the story – that is they are keyed to the context of the time element, they focus on what is the news and do not rehash old news. (Note: If editors feel the lead needs rewriting, they will do so and then run the rewrite by the reporter or city desk, explaining problems with original and explaining why the rewrite is preferable.)

8. SENTENCES: In your work, for the most part, sentences are short, simple and to the point. There is frugal use of compound or complex sentences. The active voice is dominant and passive voice is only used when necessary.

into a brief – is carefully and accurately condensed to retain key information
and details that relate directly to the theme; clutter, jargon, redundancies
and comments that add nothing have been cut away; only the most telling quotes
have been retained; background has been cut or reduced but not to the point
that relevant and clarifying context has been removed; first references of any
