The Green Streets Initiative is a grassroots organization that celebrates, promotes, and advocates for the use of alternative transportation. For environmental, health, and community building reasons, our aim is to create safer, quieter, healthier streets for commuters and citizens of all types.

The Green Streets Initiative is best known for the creation of monthly Walk/Ride Days. Walk/Ride Days occur on the last Friday of every month. On these days people everywhere are invited to go green and wear green

Our vision is to create a monthly city-wide party, which celebrates alternative transportation, gives people an opportunity to make community connections, and promotes a festive local atmosphere.

Green Streets seeks individuals in businesses, schools, and state and local government to help spread the Walk/Ride Day concept. If you are interested, please contact the Green Streets Director at walk-ride-days@comcast.net.

Green Streets Update

April 2008

Dear Green Streets friends,

Walk/Ride Days continue to spread throughout the Boston area and beyond, thanks to over 130 coordinators, 60 retail sponsors, and over 700 other supporters! Thank you for spreading the word!

Please pass this message on. We have not quite reached the tipping point where we can step out the door, breathe deeply and ask, "Where are all the cars?!" but we are getting closer!

GREEN STREETS NEWS
    - EARTH DAY VOLUNTEERS: Thanks to Cambridge City Councillor Sam Seidel, Haggerty School's Madhvi Patil, and GreenPort's Rob Riman for representing Green Streets at MIT, Boston Properties, and Lesley University Earth Day celebrations this week.
    - DEMOCRATIC SUPPORT: Thanks to Cambridge Ward 10 Democratic Committee for making encouraging Walk/Ride Days an annual goal, and for advertising Walk/Ride Days at their twice-monthly visibilities.
    - EMAIL NOTICES: Cambridge City Councillor Craig Kelley invites all who would like email news updates regarding Safe Routes to Schools and other safety, bike, and pedestrian issues that come before City Council to contact him at craig@craigkelley.org.
    - DONATIONS: Green Streets appreciates generous donations we recently received from a couple of out-of-state family members of Green Streets volunteers! We welcome others to follow their example! We can certainly use more funding - we'd like to be able to pay some of our hard-working staff.
     - NEWS FROM PORTLAND, MAINE, GREEN STREETS: We enjoyed reading about Mainers' experiences going green. Click here to read more and, of course, feel free to share your experiences as well! Send them to Walk-Ride-Days@comcast.net.
    - NEWS FROM A COUPLE OF CAMBRIDGE COORDINATORS:
Kendall Square's Forrester Research began celebrating Green Streets this Spring, joining Genzyme and other Cambridge neighbors. Forrester offers its staff a chance in an annual raffle for a new $800 bicycle for every month they "go green".
At a school, one class has asked to "own" Green Streets for the school: taking Walk/Ride Days into the other classrooms, surveying on Wednesday and Friday of Walk/Ride Day week, graphing results and acknowledging those who participate. A parent will donate Walk/Ride Day T-Shirts to students and the teacher, and Walk/Ride Days will be further integrated into the 2008-2009 curriculum.

HELP EXPAND GREEN STREETS
Green Streets has been growing at a fantastic rate, and we need your help to reach the tipping point. Here are some easy ways to get involved:
    - BECOME A COORDINATOR: Coordinate Walk/Ride Days at your business, school, department, club, or other organization. This takes just a couple of hours a month. For more info, contact us at: walk-ride-days@comcast.net.
    - INVITE NEW SPONSORS: Ask your favorite stores and restaurants to become Green Streets sponsor. Marketing packets are available on our website. Retailers will be happy you asked them to be part of this wonderful effort!
    - VOLUNTEER: Support Green Streets with your marketing, business, or web skills. See the side bar at left for specifics.

Once again, have a great Walk/Ride Day, and tell us all about it!
