What is Junior Forest Wardens?

Junior Forest Wardens (JFW) is an exciting program that allows children, youth and their families to join a club together and learn more about our natural world, while discovering how the outdoors can enrich their lives. Activities within this economical and highly social program are built around four foundations:

Registered wardens are between the ages of 6 -18 and fall within four age group categories. Possibly the most unique aspect of Junior Forest Warden program is the degree to which parents, guardians, younger siblings, friends and relatives can be involved. Family members can share in the experience of Junior Forest Wardens, while taking away knowledge, skills, friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

Junior Forest Wardens focuses on learning by doing, and there is a large emphasis on experiencing our outdoors. Activities range from wilderness trips to wildlife study, woodcarving and much, much more.

The Junior Forest Warden program is a very flexible program where member families provide the direction for the club. The club's parent council directs all club activities, meeting frequency, outings, uniform policies, badge distribution, and more. Opportunities exist for wardens to expand their experience beyond the club level through interprovincial activities such as camps and conferences, as well as winter and summer programs offered at the highly rated Long Lake Junior Forest Wardens Camp near Athabasca, Alberta.
