RHA Updates – February 28, 2008

 

RHA E-Board Announcements:

Ø  If you live in either the Eller or Pre-Education Living Learning Communities, you should receive an email from Res Life to fill out a survey.  Those who fill out the survey will receive $1 on their CatCards.

Ø  RHA is encouraging us to bid for some End of the Year Awards.  If you know of any awards we should bid for, come to Wednesday’s hall council meeting.

Ø  Alla Goldman, HC President of Posada San Pedro, ran for AD-NRHH at No Frills, and did not win.

Ø  The University of Arizona got Regional Support at No Frills last weekend for a National Award on Dominick Plado for NCC of the Year.

Ø  RHA raised $400 for Hunger Banquet.

 

Recycle Mania Updates:

RHA E-Board Elections:

Ø  Week 1 of nominations was on Feb 28th.  Second week of nominations are on March 6th. Come to RHA if you would want to be on the RHA EBoard!

 

NRHH Report:

Ø  Apply for NRHH!  Applications are due March 2nd at 11:59PM and References are due March 4th. Apply at http://uanrhh.web.arizona.edu

 

Old Business:

OCM Check Allocation - $1000 of the OCM check which was received from Finals Kits was allocated to the End of the Year Banquet and the remaining money was allocated to the General Co-Sponsorship line item of the RHA Budget.

International Runway Co-Sponsorship – $200 was approved for program to be held on March 2nd at the Pima Hall.

Women’s Herstory Month Co-Sponsorship – $600 was approved for program to be held throughout March.

 

New Business:

Sick Co-Sponsorship – Comedy Corner hosting event on March 28th-29th.  Requesting $1500 from RHA.  Come to Hall Council on Wednesday night for more information.

Battle of the Bands – Event to be held on March 31st and April 2nd from 5-7PM for Preliminaries and April 4th from 5-10PM for Finals.  Event is free and open to everyone, including on campus residents.  Requesting $1100 from RHA to put program on.  The total $2275 budget includes $640 for Security, which consists of $60/hour for each officer per night.  Contact Veronica Valenzuela at vbv5@email.arizona.edu for more information.  Bring input to Hall Council on Wednesday night.

Equipment Proposal – RHA wants to purchase a new projector because they are a very popular item which the halls check out.  Choices are: Toshiba ($1029), Optoma MovieTime ($799.99 on sale), and Optoma MovieTime ($779). All choices have a DVD player built right in them. Come to Hall Council on which projector should be purchased.

Ø  Of the Month Update for January:

o   The Regional Board missed the deadline to submit Of the Months to the National level, so the 3 OTMs that La Paz won for January are ineligible for a National Award.  However, they are still eligible for a Regional Award because the Region is going to vote on Regional winners for January.  Voting for the Regional OTMs end on February 29th and we’re still waiting for results.  Come to Wednesday’s Hall Council meeting to find out which OTMs won Regional.

Ø  Hall Council Box

o   You can now submit OTW and OTM nominations at the Front Desk.  The nomination forms are the same from last semester for now.  On Monday, March 4th, the nomination sheet will change to a whole page which will have adjustments for OTW and OTM nominations in addition to giving you the ability to give some suggestions on how to improve Hall Council.  Go to the front desk to nominate awesome people and give hall council input.

RHA Executive Board Reports:

Ø  RHA President Leah Durnin, NCC Dominick Plado, and Advisor Jacki Gloger are representing the U of A in Wyoming for a No Frills Conference.  VP of Public Relations Dustin Sandell will be running the RHA General Body meetings on the 21st and 28th of February.

Ø  RHA Executive Board Elections for the 2008-2009 year will begin next week.  See the RHA EBoard Elections Timeline section below.

Ø  The next NACURH 2009 meeting will be on Friday, February 29th at 3PM in El Portal.

 

NRHH Report:

Ø  Of the Month (OTM) writing party on Thursday, February 28th from 6-8PM at the Maricopa Residence Hall.  This is a great opportunity to write Of the Months for February as a group!

Ø  La Paz earned 13 RHA Spirit Points for winning 3 OTMs for January at the Campus Level, including:

o   Colonia de La Paz – Community of the Month

o   Carl Meyer – Student of the Month

o   Marlene Cota – Spotlight of the Month

Recycle Mania Update – Week 3

La Paz is tied in 15th place with Kaibab-Huachuca with 0.54 lbs/resident for that week alone.

Old Business:

Holocaust Remembrance Vigil Co-Sponsorship – Many halls disagreed with using shirts for promotions, so the co-sponsorship was cut down to $900 from $1200.  The proposal passed.

 

New Business:

Women’s Herstory Month Co-Sponsorship – The Women’s Resource Center is putting on a program to help tell the stories of women through various formats.  Program will be held on March 5th in the Kachina Lounge of the Student Union.  RHA is asking for $600 to fund this event.  Bring input to Wednesday’s hall council meeting.

 

International Runaway Co-Sponsorship – This is a show which exhibits different fashion and entertainment from other countries.  Residents and campus clubs will model cultural clothing and perform talent.  Program is scheduled for March 2nd at 6PM at Pima Hall.  RHA is asking for $200.  Bring input to Wednesday’s hall council meeting.

 

OCM Check Allocation – RHA got $4,108.40 from On Campus Marketing for the Finals Kits back in December 2007.  RHA wants to allocate $1000 for the RHA End of the Year Banquet to help fund some remaining expenditures for the event, and allocate the remaining $3,108.40 to General Co-Sponsorships to help fund current and future proposals.  Since RHA did not send delegates to NCLC (National Collegiate Leadership Conference), RHA wants to allocate the $600 from that line item to the NACURH line item to help fund extra costs.  Bring your input to Wednesday’s Hall Council meeting at 9PM.

 

Recognition:

Ø  Because RHA forgot to print off the OTW nominations before leaving for No Frills, RHA did not vote on OTWs for this week.  They will be voted on at next week’s meeting.  La Paz submitted 5 nominations which revolved around the Spaghetti Dinner and Valentine’s programs.

Ø  The Hall Council Box will be returning to the La Paz front desk Wednesday, February 27th after the Hall Council meeting.  Go out and recognize people for doing amazing things in the hall.

New Business:

Holocaust Remembrance Vigil Co-Sponsorship – This is a program which honors those who lost their lives in the Holocaust with a 24-hour Vigil to begin on March 26th at 10AM and go until March 27th at 10AM.  Requesting $1200 from RHA to help put the program together; which, if approved, will leave our RHA Co-Sponsorship fund with only $56.  Want RHA to co-sponsor this? Email your input to cameyer@email.arizona.edu, or come to Wednesday’s Hall Council meeting to give your input.

 

Hall Announcements:

Gila – Help schools in Tucson fund their education by saving Box Tops and bringing them to RHA every week.  Bring Box Tops to Hall Council for your RHA Reps to give to Gila!

 

Posada San Pedro – Mystery Masquerade will be this Saturday Night from 8-11PM in El Portal!  Snacks will be provided and will also include free photography!

La Paz won 1 OTW for “Be Good in Bed” as Educational Program of the Week!

RHA Updates – February 7, 2008

 

RHA EBoard Announcements:

Ø  The NACURH 2009 Committee meeting is on February 15th at 3PM in El Portal.  They will be determining the Presenting part of the NACURH delegation.

Ø  NACURH 2008 is around the corner. If you're interested in applying for this conference, email Carl Meyer immediately at cameyer@email.arizona.edu.

Ø  If you're interested in getting involved at the Regional level by voting on Regional OTMs, email RHA National Communications Coordinator at plado@life.arizona.edu.

Recycle Mania Update:

La Paz is in 7th place with 0.78 lbs/resident.  Top 4 halls are: Yuma, Stadium, Pima, and VDP.  Yuma and Stadium's statistics only differ by only 0.06 lbs/resident.

 

NRHH Report:

17 OTMs were submitted for January, which includes 4 from La Paz.  NRHH Open House is on Wednesday, February 13th at 5PM in Maricopa.  OTM Party on February 28th from 6-7PM in Maricopa.

 

Old Business:

Call for Support-Alla Goldman for IACURH RBD: Proposal of $1149 passed, which will come out of the Leadership Coordinator's Discretionary Funds.

 

Take a Faculty to Lunch Co-Sponsorship: Proposal from Res Life for $240 passed.

 

2008-2009 Rate Setting Vote: There was long discussion on this measure from the RHA Reps.  The input which Carl and Tim got about the rates had been for a FIXED DOLLAR increase for all the halls, which was how La Paz voted.  RHA instead voted on a FIXED PERCENTAGE increase of 8.94% for all halls.  This is NOT official, as it still has to move to the Arizona Board of Regents where the official rates will be determined in March.

 

New Business:

Happy Hour 2008 Co-Sponsorship: UAPD and ASUA put on this program each March to educate residents and students about partying during Spring Break.  They're requesting $1500 from RHA to put on this program. 

 

HoGG / Stadium Turn Around Trip Co-Sponsorship: HoGG and Stadium are teaming up together for a Turn Around trip to Disneyland on February 22nd at 11PM.  Those living outside of HoGG and Stadium may sign up to go on this trip for $80, with the money given to HoGG's or Stadium's Hall Directors.  Requesting $1500 from RHA. 

 

Hunger Banquet: Joint program being put on by Res Life and El Mundo to educate about world hunger.  Being held in Pima on February 27th at 6PM.  Open to first 75 residents who sign up.  Contact cameyer@email.arizona.edu to get yourself on the list!  RHA is requesting $1000 from Programming line item (currently at $11,664.74).

Posada San Pedro: Posada Prom titled "Mystery Masquerade" will be held on February 16th at 8PM in El Portal.

RHA Updates – 1.31.08

 

Announcements:

Up Til Dawn - All night program to be held on March 1st which helps benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  There are teams of 6, each hall to have a team with each member of the team to include 50 addresses of supporters.  Goal to have more than 6000 addresses of supporters.  Sign up by Friday, February 8th at lyndz@email.arizona.edu.

 

Student Alumni Association - This organization is in charge of putting together events for Alumni and for also keeping contact with UA Alumni.  They are recruiting Freshmen and Sophomores to help this organization.  If interested in helping out, email Elizabeth Tanori at tanori@email.arizona.edu.  You may also pick up an information packet / application at the La Paz Front Desk.  Applications are due by Monday, February 11th at 5PM to the Swede Johnson Building.  They are also holding a viewing party of the U of A / ASU basketball game on Sunday, February 10th.  The event will start at 12:30 in Gallagher Theatre and will be free to the first 350 people, so if you plan on going, show up early.

 

Res Life Committees - Residence Life is creating 2 special temporary committees which are out to improve our halls. These two committees are: (1) Safety and Security Issues Committee, and (2) Residential Options for the New Residence Halls.  If you're interested in joining either of these committees, contact Nicholle Zarkower NO LATER THAN February 15, 2008 at 626-9658 or through email at zarkower@life.arizona.edu. Look for some posters in the La Paz lobby and common areas this weekend.  The committees will begin in March and will meet only once or twice this semester.

NACURH 2009 Update:

The UA is planning to bid for the NACURH conference for 2009.  This is a national spirit conference which brings over 3000 students from more than 250 universities across the nation to one school for a whole weekend to show off their school spirit.  As of right now, the University of Arizona is the only school in the entire country that is bidding for this conference, meaning that our chances of hosting this conference are very high at this point.  We will know in May 2008 whether or not we're hosting the conference.  If you would like to help put this conference together with whatever time you have (little to no time commitment needed), email Carl at cameyer@email.arizona.edu

 

NRHH Report:

NRHH is doing a community service project at Ben's Bells on Friday, February 8th at 3PM at the Ben's Bells on University Blvd next to Starbucks.  Everybody is welcome to attend.  This week is RA Appreciation Week.  Go out and appreciate your RA!

 

Old Business:

Student Wellness Co-Sponsorship - Input from hall council was given to RHA. The proposal passed, but the approved amount was reduced to $800 instead of the original $1350.

 

New Business:

Call for Support: Alla Goldman for IACURH RBD -  Alla Goldman, Hall Council President of Posada San Pedro, is bidding for the AD-NRHH position at the Regional Level, which is in charge of all the Of the Month (OTM) submissions for the Regional level and submitting all Regional Winning OTMs to the National Level.  Alla is presenting at No Frills, and if she wins, she will need to be at NACURH to be inaugurated into her new position.  She is requesting conference registration and transportation to No Frills and NACURH 2008.  Requesting amount is $1149 which includes both conferences.  Amount is going to come out of Coordinator Discretionary category, which has a $17000 budget.  Do you think RHA should send Alla to Wyoming in February for No Frills? Take a Faculty to Lunch Co-Sponsorship - Residence Life puts on a program which students can take their professor to Lunch.  However, Res Life is out of funding for this program, and is asking for $240 from RHA's Co-Sponsorship line to continue this program for the remainder of the year.  What do you think of this? 2008-2009 Rate Setting Discussion - There is a proposed 8.94% increase in housing rates for the 2008-09 academic year.  This increase will help fund the increasing price of Res Life's necessities including utilities, wages, and line staff.  5% of the 8.94% is reserved for Debt Services which is Res Life's Mortgage Bill for construction projects in the past and the future, which includes the paying back of $200 million that Res Life will be taking out this semester to fund three new halls.  Res Life is proposing two different types of housing increases which includes:

  1. Fixed Percentage - each hall's rates will increase by 8.94%.
  2. Fixed Dollar Amount - each hall's rates will increase by $429.

Posada San Pedro - There is a Posada Prom on Saturday, February 16th from 8-11PM in El Portal.  Everyone is invited.

 

Maricopa - Blood Drive on Tuesday, February 5th from 2:15-6PM in El Portal.  It can be done through walk-in or by appointment.  Those who wish to make an appointment for this may email Maricopa's Hall Council President at marygabk@email.arizona.edu

RHA Updates - January 24, 2008

 

Announcements:

 

A-Plus is conducting an online survey for Freshmen Students to study financial behaviors.  Survey takes 15 minutes.  First 1000 students who fill out survey win $10, next 1000 students win $5, every student after that will be entered into a drawing for a pizza party.  Posters will be posted within the near future in La Paz.  Email A-Plus at aplus@email.arizona.edu.

 

KUAT (the PBS Station for Tucson) is hosting a series of telethons in the Spring Semester to bring in money to the station so they can help fund their programs.  They are looking for students who can answer telephones for at least 4 hours a week during the Telethons.  If you're interested in participating in this, email Erin Deely at edeely@kuat.org

 

RHA Executive Board Announcements:

 

There are 3 new halls which will be built and open by 2010-2011.  There were talks about making all the new halls 100% wireless with no landlines.  The RHA Representatives voted in a landslide to oppose this idea because many computers wouldn’t be compatible with this concept at the time of the opening of these new halls.

 

Recycle Mania officially starts on Monday, January 28th and will run until April 7th.  Each hall will compete against each other to see who can recycle the most pounds of recyclables per resident. Each week, RHA will announce the most updated statistics where the RHA Representatives will report back to La Paz on where we stand.  The Top 3 halls at the end will win cash awards from RHA: 1st place gets $1000, 2nd place gets $500, 3rd place gets $250.

 

The CUT Competition is still operating.  This is a competition which halls compete against each other to see which hall can cut back the most on utilities for each month.  The winning hall each month receives a prize from Res Life with a Grand Prize at the end of the year.

 

Members of the RHA Executive Board will be making visits to our Hall Council meetings and programs.  Be on the lookout.

 

NRHH Report:

The next NRHH meeting is Wednesday, January 30th at 5PM in Maricopa.  Those who are either members of NRHH or plan to be members of NRHH are invited to attend.  La Paz won an Of the Month (OTM) in December at the Regional Level for Kim Cowser, La Paz's former Desk Manager, as the Student of the Month.  La Paz earned HUGE RHA Spirit Points for that regional winning OTM.

 

Business Items:

RHA is looking for people who want to serve on an RHA Committee and help make the campus a better place.  If you're interested, email RHA Rep Carl Meyer at cameyer@email.arizona.edu for committee information and contacts.   Those who join an RHA Committee will earn a Yellow Star (10 points) in the Stars of La Paz Recognition Competition.

RHA Spirit Award Update:
La Paz is currently 3rd Place out of 20 halls in the competition for the RHA Spirit Award, right behind Posada San Pedro and Gila. Congratulations!!!

Next RHA Meeting:
Next RHA General Body meeting is Thursday, January 31st in the Santa Rita Room of the Student Union.  Meet in the La Paz Lobby by 4:30PM to go to the meeting.  This meeting will include housing rates for next year, which is a very important topic, especially for those who are planning to live on campus for next year.  Those who attend RHA on January 31st and February 7th will earn Yellow Stars and DOUBLE points (10 points) for EACH meeting.  See the Hall Council bulletin board at the front desk with more information on this point system.
