About Your College Project

Demonstrator Project Name

RVC Library Spreadsheets.
Project Start Date

July 2008.
Project Length
(days, weeks, months)

4 months, but may be ongoing.

Participants Involved

Librarians at the RVC in both campuses (Hawkshead and Camden)
Brief Description of the project
(Aims and Objectives)

The aim is to use time more effectively and avoid duplication of work by sharing documents.
The objectives are to create an efficient reference and monitoring system for RVC book orders, to make lives easier for the RVC librarians.
How will Google Docs help with your project?
(i.e to use the Form to collect data from surveys, Presentation to display information, Word Processor to share formal documents, brain storm ideas etc)

Forms will be used for book suggestions from all users (students and staff), which will be placed on the RVC intranet for easy access.   The spreadsheet will be used to collect data from the Form and for manual entries too, to keep all data in one place.
What is the plan of engagement?
(What needs to happen when and who needs to do what)

1. To set up a usable form and spreadsheet, for all users of technical abilities to participate in.
2. Initial training from Caroline Bell on using Google Docs and ongoing training throughout the process on particular functions and features.

What project outcomes do you expect?
(i.e creating documents collaboratively with staff and students in more effective ways; to bridge the technological gap between students and staff).

1. Increase collaboration amongst RVC library staff
2. More efficient ways of working
3. Using more innovative technologies to enhance working methods.
What encouraged you to take part in this project?

Could see the definite potential in improvement of communication in and across the two RVC campuses.
Previous working methods with Excel caused too much wasted time in the acquisition process, and too much duplication with data entry.
Google Docs seemed to provide a solution to the duplication problem, with the sharing compatibilities.
What would you like to get out of this project?

Essentially to save time and be more efficient, as well as an interest in learning new technologies, especially collaboration tools.
There's also a confidence boost in learning something new and keeping ahead of the times.
What sort of support will you need to make this project a success?

Caroline Bell to provide support throughout up until the very end of the project for any user problems.
What sort of support do you think the participants will need to make this project a success?

Continuing support for the participants needs, so they will come out of the project with confidence in using Google Docs in the future.
