After Obedience, Comes Dependence
That was a statement made at one of our weekly prayer meetings. It really struck both Kelly and I as to that being exactly where we are right now. And frankly it’s not easy. You think obedience was tough, try complete dependence! I’ve learned that we think we depend on God, but really, we don’t. We rely on our own resources, our own abilities, and our own connections. The fact is God provides them- not us! HE is the maker of heaven and earth and to think we can do anything apart from Him is arrogant and foolish. The fact is, most of the time we don’t even realize that we are trying to do it ourselves. That is what has happened to me awhile back. And I became more and more discouraged with people and with God Himself. I was so caught up in what was going on that I didn’t see it until I was to the breaking point. God allows us to go there to see our need for total dependence on Him. For me it all came to a head at a Bible study one night. I really felt like I had been getting beat up lately about going into the mission field. I have had a few people questioning what we are doing (and that is okay, I want them to ask us questions, to understand what we are doing) but I also have had others that flat out disagree with our approach and tell us that we should be doing it differently, or even not at all. I was to the point of questioning God’s call. Then God began to remind me of all of the confirmations that He has given. At the study, I was asked if I wanted to share what was going on, but I couldn’t, there was so much emotion built up inside that if I opened my mouth I knew I would break down. The analogy that came to mind is that of a soldier. As followers of Christ we are all soldiers and we are in battles whether we acknowledge or recognize them. There are times when soldiers get beat up and tired and they need a little time to rest and get reenergized to get back into the battle and fight effectively. At the end of that evening he asked the men to gather around me, to lay hands on me and pray. The Bible talks about praying in the Spirit. That is what these men did! They did not know what was specifically going on in my life and the battles taking place, yet they prayed specifically to the situations taking place. Sometimes God takes you to that place where you are completely empty just so He can fill you back up; to teach you not only obedience but dependency on Him in ALL things.
“BUT YOU HAVE 6 KIDS!”
This is a comment we have heard expressed as a concern for our moving to Africa. Yes, we do have six kids and we are THANKFUL that God has chosen to bless us this way. For some He blesses financially, for others it is extraordinary wisdom, knowledge, mercy, and the list goes on. We are grateful that He has chosen our blessing to be children (and will gratefully accept anymore He sends our way! J). And yes, it is a challenge to move a family of eight halfway around the world. But just as we believe God has called, approved, and will equip us for the work in Zambia we are doing, we see that our family size is a blessing as well. When Brian was in Zambia last summer he was frequently asked about his family. When he showed our picture, he received smiles, congratulations, high-fives, and questions of any more coming! Africans very much view children as blessings from God. In speaking with a friend who was in Zambia for two years as a missionary, she commented that they were not fully accepted into their village until they had their first child. Our children are another instrument God will use in our ministry in Zambia.
Pastor Willie Hunter, a representative with Gospelink, will be staying with us the week of February 10th. If you would like to meet or just talk to him on the phone while he is here, please give us a call. Pastor Hunter has been with Gospelink for 7 years and would happily answer any questions you have about Gospelink and the International Bible College where we will serve, as well as their Pastor Sponsorship program. He will be sharing in the Missions Center during the Sunday School hour at Evangelical Free Church in Willmar on February 10th at 9:45 am. We hope you will join us! Please call if you have any questions!
$25,000 Container, shipping, taxes and duty As of January 13th-
THANK YOU!!!!
MONTHLY SUPPORT: $4500
Just what does this monthly support entail? Included in this amount is our monthly household living expenses (food, school, paper products, fuel for generator, household misc., auto insurance, fuel, life insurance, health insurance, tithe, and taxes), and ministry expenses (taxes, administration (*see note below), travel costs, visas, passports, work permits).
*A common question supporters ask is how much of their donation goes directly to us. The answer is 100%. We DO NOT have to give a percentage to Gospelink for administrative fees. The Administration costs above are our own costs (postage and copies for newsletters, phone calls, insurances, etc). This is a big issue. When we were in Colorado for training, we had the largest family, but one of the lower levels of support needed per month (of course our airfare was more…J). That just means we are responsible for those costs ourselves so we are able to better shop around for prices.
Another question we get deals with the airfare/travel costs. The initial outgoing cost for airfare and immigration is to get us to Zambia. While there, a percentage of our monthly support goes into a fund that grows until we are ready to come back for furlough, for future visa and work permit fees, etc so that we don’t have to try and raise money from the field each time a new expense arises.
How are we going to meet this monthly goal? First off, we are going to rely on God and God’s people! When you support us in any way, you are not giving to us; you are giving to God and His work first. We are just His instruments.
There are numerous ways our support could be attained. We are looking for individuals and churches that can support us at the following amounts per month:
17 people at $100 25 people at $50 56 people at $25 15 people at $10
Of course this is just one possible way we could reach our support. Any amount you chose to partner with is up to you. Gifts of all sizes will be cheerfully accepted as they are cheerfully given (God loves a cheerful giver! 2 Corinthians 9:7). We have one gentleman who gives us $3 a month and he couldn’t be happier about it. There is no gift too big or too small! Would you please pray about joining our monthly support team?
