CHINA BIRD WATCH
The Annual Report 2007

The six issues of China Bird Watch were successful edited and published in 2007. There was the summary to our sponsors and readers.
It was the second year that we changed China Bird Watch from a newsletter to a magazine. China Bird Watch is playing an increasing role in advocating bird conservation through education in mainland China.
The magazine had copperplate cover and back cover, 16 formats, 24 pages, and additional colorful middle pages in 2007. We also published a 32 format of 57th issue, the fifth this year. In order to discuss bird-related topics in detail, we edited special topic for every issue. For example, concerning the safety of migratory waterfowl, birding trips in Spring Festival and May 1st Festival, in action for bird conservation. We also concerned many important bird-related news happened in 2007, including the bird photography exhibition between mainland and Taiwan, the annual China bird photography salon, birding records in Chinese universities, Chinese cameraman awarding at the world rear birds year book competition, bird watching race in the universities and writing competition. Some new columns were established this year, including bird-related environmental education, raptor introduction, bird ID, and rare bird species report. We also published many excellent bird pictures this year.
Besides the magazine editing, we also finished three other projects.
Firstly, cooperating with Xinjiang Conservation Fund (XCF), we designed the first series of Chinese Threatened Waterfowl Postcard. The postcards were sent to other bird-related organizations to advocate the local educational activities.
Secondly, cooperating with Chinese Ornithology Society, we designed the Distribution of Chinese Endemic Galliformes Map and Chinese Endemic Galliformes Postcard during the forth International Galliformes Symposium and the Ninth Annual Conference of Chinese Ornithology Society which were held in Chengdu, China. The editor also introduced the magazine in the conference.
Thirdly, the blog of China Bird Watch and the editors’ chat-room were formed.
In 2007, we had 950 copies per issue, including 96 for ornithologists, 118 for staff in natural reserves, 114 for student groups in schools and universities, 25 for eco-tourism companies and media, 112 for birders, 542 for environment-related organizations, and 39 for authors. We also send 51 to individuals and organizations in Hong Kong and Taiwan, 39 for oversea.
The problems which we are facing include:
Firstly, the press of editing and posting is increasing for lacking enough volunteers.
Secondly, the cost is high because of increasing postage.
Thirdly, some readers cannot receive the magazines for some reasons. The cost is higher than normal for extra magazines and posting.
We also tried to find other resources to support the magazine besides the fund from Darwin Fund. This year, we encouraged birders to subscribe the magazine instead of receiving it for free. Totally 132 organizations and individuals subscribed the magazines in 2007. 16 people donated extra money to us. At the same time, we published some bird-related advertisements this year, including Nan Yang Optical Company, Si Ta Optical Company, and Swarovski Company. Such resources reinforced our ability of sustainable development. The detailed finance report was attached.
We will keep publishing the magazine to advocate bird conservation and education in mainland China in the future.
