What Coaches Look For
Pre-game approach
Effort
Knowledge of simple/basic rules
Keeping it safe
Desire
Uniform
Pre-game is key! Talk to coaches and/or school. Let them know you’ll actually be there; when you get there, introduce yourself.
Coaches truly appreciate effort and look for/expect it. You are getting paid to be there, earn your money.
They want you to know BASIC & SIMPLE rules.
Call the big fouls – makes life easier for you and safer for them.
Show desire and seem eager to improve
Always look the part! First looks make a big and lasting impression; also it gives you credibility.
Coaches expect the following as the level you officiate grow:
Control
Consistence (end to end)
Coverage
Confidence
Commitment
Communication (w/partners, players and coaches)
Professionalism
Fairness
Proper pre-game can aid in all these situations
Coaches not only expect everything they want, they deserve it.
When coaches say you did something wrong, be sure you don’t actually do it!
