Dear Friends;
Early last year our family
experienced the tragedy of losing our son, brother, brother in law,
uncle and friend Joseph A. McGowan (JAM) to suicide. Through this experience
our family was shown more love, compassion and selflessness that we
ever thought imaginable. Since then we have been exposed to more and
more individual and family struggles that arise for many reasons. Most
of these unfortunate situations are a result of depression and addiction.
In Delaware County the average
suicide rate rose from 60 in 2005 to 90 in 2007. It is estimated that
an average of six people are suicide “survivors” for each suicide
that occurs in the United States. In the context of suicide, the word
survivor refers to the family and friends of the person who has died
by suicide.
Through his struggles, Joe
was a one of a kind person always helping others. He was someone to
be admired in his ability to reach and help those who needed a friend.
Whether it was coaching, befriending, leading or accepting those who
loved and relied on him, he had the ability to make everyone feel like
family.
On Saturday June 7, 2008 we
are coming together to celebrate JAM Day. The goal of JAM Day is to
bring awareness to the community wide problems faced by so many of our
loved ones. Awareness and understanding of addiction and depression
is crucial in the well being of our communities. These diseases have
lasting effects on the individuals suffering as well as all those who
love and support them.
We are constantly overwhelmed
by the support we receive. As a family, we would like all to know that
we believe mental health is just as fragile as physical health. We appreciate
all the prayers, kind words and encouragement received. Thank you for
your support and generosity.
With love,
The McGowan Family
