To fit most sized noggins

Size 5.5mm – two


Gauge

4st per inch


Yarn

Worsted Weight (about 100 yards)




CO 67 stitches


Working in garter stitch (knit all rows) make the brim =


For a toddler size head (fits a three year old, say) make the brim ½ inch


For all other noggins – 3 years up to adult size then make brim 1 ½ inch.


Working in Stocking Stitch (knit one row then purl one row) knit thirty rows ending in a purl row.


Then start to decrease:


Decrease:


K1, *k4, k2tog repeat from * to end of row

P one row

K1, *k3, k2tog repeat from * to end of row

P one row

k1, *k2, k2tog repeat from * to end of row

P one row

k1, *k1, k2tog repeat from * to end of row

*k2 tog repeat from * to end of row

*p2tog repeat from * to end of row


Repeat last two rows til end of stitches BO tightly


Using mattress stitch sew the hat’s seams together (instructions for mattress stitch here: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/mattress.html )


Weave in ends.

*{there are many, many hats out there which have similar basic construction to this one. If you think about it there are also many ways to make this hat more interesting – you could use stripes of different coloured yarn, or use purl stitch a couple times to add a different stripe in the same colour yarn, or even rib the hat using a simple *K2, P1 rep from * technique. You could even add ear flaps. How about that. This basic hat leaves it up to you to add some individuality.}
