My name is David Dunn; My Aboriginal name is Gaagang. I use some of the traditional symbols my father and uncles showed me but I try to use my own style. I was told by an Elder from the Warburton community to paint what you feel not what you see, so I paint from the heart and from the memories of my childhood. Our family's totem is the emu and I have been told I have an extremely strong sense of Spirit and Family.
This painting depicts an Aboriginal Elder teaching the young girls how to catch the small lizards and goannas for there tucker. The young girls will also be taught how dig for yams and which berries are the right ones to eat. The Wiradjuri Women are the back bone to the Wiradjuri Nation. Back in creation time Baiame created all and placed certain Spirits in every thing and place. He gave Laws to these spirits and each spirit certain powers to make the aboriginal people obey his laws. The spirits were left in places where people and animals came to drink and eat. They were given the power to bring on new life, depending on how the people obeyed Baiame laws.
